tuir November 16, 1989 Ine Pendulum . Israel trip a pioneer program Dr. J. Christian Wilson, assistant professor of religion, ^''ill be hosting a ten-day winter term trip to Israel. Several Elon students plan to make the trip, and any E1(mi student is welcome to join the group. Three hours academic credit religion can be arranged. Credit can be given at either the 200 or 300 level, but students seeking upper level credit will ^ve to complete more work. Students who take the trip for ^^^ademic credit will be required to keep a journal of their exper iences and complete assigned readings about Israel prior to the trip. Places that will be visited during the trip include Tel Aviv, Carmel, Haifa, Cana of Costa Rica couples fun and learning ®y Theresa Riley The Pendulum ^ Habla usted espanol? It does not matter. Working ^owledge of Spanish is an objective, not a requirement, for ^inter Term in San Jose, Costa Rica. Students attend classes in survival and beginning Spanish, *^*ight by Dr. Ernest Lunsford, ^d live with host families who *Peak little to no English. "Costa ^ca is an island of democracy, stability and peacefulness in a regi(Mi where there is considraable turmoil," Dr. Chalmers Brum baugh, associate professor of political science, said. Part of the course includes sight-seeing. Museums, embas sies, farms, factories and histor ical locations will make up some short trips. A white water rafting Expedition is also planned. The study will cost $1525, is Worth three credit hours and iieeds 20 participants. Galilee, Nazareth, Megiddo (Armageddon), Caesarea, Caper naum, the Sea of Galilee, the Mount of Beatitudes, Jericho, Qumian, the Dead Sea, the Jordan River, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. Wilson made a similar trip on his own two years ago. "I saw this as a real good possibility for Elon students, he said, citing a good price as one of tlie reasons. "As a country, Israel is very good for touring," Wilson said, "(You) don’t have to spend a lot of time on the bus." Cost of the trip is $1198 from New York. This includes airfare, hotels, all ground transportation, guides, and two meals per day (breakfast and dinner-students will pay for their own lunches). Dr. Wilson will arrange the air transportation to New York for those who will be leaving from Greensboro. Airfare from Greensboro to New York is approximately $219. The departure date is January 3. Extension trips to Egypt are also available at additional cost. While the trip to Israel is not an official part of tiie college’s studies abroad program, Wilson hopes it can be in the future. He calls this journey "a pioneer program," and says, "We’re looking towards the possiblity of making this a regular Winter Term offering."
