The ^aks, for example, have long passed their intended life span, ^hen these new halls are constructed, provide for larger rooms. The residence hall rooms a student's home for almost nine months. Make it someplace ^ student won't mind spending time. * Rethink the visitation policy. the time he or she' reaches college, a person is old enough to establish his or her own policies ^bout contact with members of the opposite sex. Maintain some residence halls for people interested in visitation hours, but extend or eliminate hours in other halls. Install more laundry machines. There's no reason why people should have to do their laundry at niidnight just to avoid competition for machines. ^hen building new residence halls, provide air conditioning in of them. Why would a college in the South build fnything without air condition ing? rooms are of such a ^ize that spending a hot spring in one is like standing in a closet - it's tough to breathe. ^^ClAL LIFE Iniprove and expand the student center. Budget more money for programs of student interest. Although the cultural programs educational, most students ^^'e no desire to attend. Ask students for suggestions about entertainment and follow up on those ideas. Time after time, students say they drink on the "weekends because they have nothing better to do. n^provements have been made during the past few years. Continue that tradition. ^cademics Change academic catalogues to indicate if a class is only offered One semester of the year. The program is often a hindrance rather than a help to participants. Ma y Honors Fellows say the only reason they stay with the program is so they can pre register early. Otherwise, many think the hassle of ‘‘^justing schedules to accommodate an honors class that counts towards nothing but semester hours is simply ridiculous. administration * The administration must listen to the demands and concerns of students and not simply file them away. As paying customers of this institution, students have a right to be heard and see acuon. Too often, students who try to tackle problems are turned away or treated like inferiors. They are told to have their parents call the school if the problems are that serious. Students are adults and are smarter than they are often given credit for. Listen to them. ♦ Examine Elon's priorities. What’s more important: recruit ing new students or maintaining Pat Hobin / The Pendulum Concern: Better lighting on campus. good relations with the present student body? Perhaps too much emphasis is placed upon potential students at the expense of those already at the school. Ask any businessperson, and he or she will tell you that pleasing old customers is just as important as looking for new ones. * Remember the image Elon sells: friendly, homey, caring. That's why many students came here. Don't disappoint them. , Most of these ideas probably do not come as a surprise to students, faculty and staff of the college. As you read the list, you probably thought, "How true," or "I've heard that one before." We intend to re-examine these problems and note any progress later in the semester. Certainly, not all of these requests can be fulfilled in the T very near future- But simple File photo things like installing clocks can be done within a matter of days. The Pendulum welcomes responses to these requests as well as suggestions for additional improvements. These can be sent in the form of letters to the editor and dropped off at the newspaper office. We look forward to hearing from concerned members of the Elon community and seeing positive results.- \ ,
