toward the shack fund-raiser, the
contributor will receive a
"Habitat dollar" with a space for
his or her name. The signed
dollars will be tacked onto the
shack. "By the end of the week,
the shack will be covered with
dollars ... I hope it will be,"
Barnhill said.
Habitat will also be raising
funds through collection jars
placed in community businesses
and through a five-dollar "rent"
paid by some shack residents who
represent other community
organizations.
The Habitat project is being
tied into the week-long Earth
Week celebration. "Taking care
of people is part of our
responsibility to taking care of
the earth," said Doug Long,
president of the Alamance
County chapter of Habitat.
Richard McBride, advisor to
the campus chapter of Habitat,
will spend Tuesday night in the
shack. "There is so much that
we have that we don’t value
properly because we’ve never
been without it," he said.
"Spending one night in the shack
is really no great sacrifice."
Habitat is dedicated ot
getting families out of shacks.
"We’re doing it to raise
awareness. They're doing it
becuase they have to. It's their
lifestyle," Long said.
The Habitat for Humanity
shack demonstration will begin
on Monday, April 16 at 6:30
p.m. in front of Alamance and
will continue until Friday
afternoon.
Arcaro
in North Carolina to participate.
Learning about this very different
culture through the study-tour is
"a modest effort by a group of
faculty members to bring that
knowledge back to the students,"
Arcaro said.
He believes that his
knowledge and experiences in
India will not only help broaden
his personal cultural horizons,
but his students’ as well. "Being
able to say, ’I was there' is
invaluable," he said.
By drawing from his own
experiences in a different culture,
Arcaro will be able to use stories
and examples to make such
cultures more real to his students.
He said this kind of experience
"... makes your world bigger, and
since I have some impact on
students, it tends to make their
worlds bigger as well."
