The signed dollars will be tacked onto the shack. "By the end of the week, the shack will be covered with dollars ... I hope it will be," Barnhill said. Habitat will also be raising funds through collection jars placed in community businesses and through a five-dollar "rent" paid by some shack residents who represent other community organizations. The Habitat project is being tied into the week-long Earth Week celebration. "Taking care of people is part of our responsibility to taking care of the earth," said Doug Long, president of the Alamance County chapter of Habitat. Richard McBride, advisor to the campus chapter of Habitat, will spend Tuesday night in the shack. "There is so much that we have that we don’t value properly because we’ve never been without it," he said. "Spending one night in the shack is really no great sacrifice." Habitat is dedicated ot getting families out of shacks. "We’re doing it to raise awareness. They're doing it becuase they have to. It's their lifestyle," Long said. The Habitat for Humanity shack demonstration will begin on Monday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. in front of Alamance and will continue until Friday afternoon. Arcaro in North Carolina to participate. Learning about this very different culture through the study-tour is "a modest effort by a group of faculty members to bring that knowledge back to the students," Arcaro said. He believes that his knowledge and experiences in India will not only help broaden his personal cultural horizons, but his students’ as well. "Being able to say, ’I was there' is invaluable," he said. By drawing from his own experiences in a different culture, Arcaro will be able to use stories and examples to make such cultures more real to his students. He said this kind of experience "... makes your world bigger, and since I have some impact on students, it tends to make their worlds bigger as well."
