Arts and Entertainment Page 5 — The Storyteller — Torrence to present tales of folklore, ghost stories DeeDee Garowan The Pendulum Elon students and the community will soon be treated to the vast imagination and fascinating tales of the famed "Story Lady," Jackie Torrence. The Rowan County native’s program will include popular stories of mountain folklore, such as the Jack Tales and Brer Rabbit stories. Her famous ghost stories will be told as well. Starting out by spinning tales as a librarian, Torrence began taking her talents to the road, eventually becoming one of America's most renowned storytellers. Along the way, she has appeared in the Wall Street Journal and on television's "Good Evening Show," "CBS Sunday Morning," and David Letterman. Torrence has also been honored with six award-winning albums, three award-winning television shows, and the Annie Glenn Award in 1987 for her triumph over a childhood speech impediment. In addition to Elon College, the "Story Lady's" tour also includes slops at the Kennedy Center, the World Theatre, and Lincoln Center. Torrence will appear at Elon's Fine Arts Theatre on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is by ticket only. Tickets, $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children, will be available in the Fine Arts Box Office from 12:30-5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. %l f Jackie Torrence Laser rock show set for Sept. 18 A three-dimensional visual rock show will be presented Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 9 p.m. ■ This laser light show has been described as "something like you've never seen before." It is presented in the Elon College Fine Arts Center by the Student Union Board free of charge. "Out of the Darkness", includes 35mm slides, film, computer and electronic graphics, and the most sophisticated ion laser system available today. The laser and light show will be accompanied by the music of popular groups, such as Bon Jovi, U2, INXS, and Talking Heads. This is a program produced by Chameleon Productions formed by John and Dan Markham. The personnel members of Chameleon Productions have previously provided consultation, design and have toured with some of today's popular musicians, such as Yes, White Snake, Deep Purple and the Scorpions. Tom Chapin to perform tonight at 8 Kristy Davis The Pendulum One of the top entertainers in contemporary folk music, Tom Chapin, will be performing at Elon. Chapin is noted for Cottonpath Gospel, an Off- Broadway musical. Recently, he has produced children's albums fcx* the "Cabbage Patch Kids." He is also recognized as the host of tlie National Geographic Explorer series. Chapin's musical abilities can be attributed to his family. He along with his brothers Harry and Steve formed The Chapin Brothers. Harry Chapin is recognized for his songs, "The Cats in the Cradle," and "Taxi." Chapin hopes that his music, "provides a generational connection," in which adults and children listen to his music together. Tom Chapin George Troxler, a History professor at Elon, said Chapin's music is, "very much like John McCutcheon," who came to Elon last fall. The concert will be held in the Fine Arts Theatre on Thurs. Sept. 6, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is by ticket only. Tickets are Improve your foreign lingo Beginning this Fall there will be foreign language tables set up around campus for those interested in practicing their foreign language skills.
