"I had no idea what was going on," said Cindy Trogdon, a freshman at Elon. "I didn't hear about the elections at all, not even through my orientation groups. When election lime came all 1 saw was posters. Vote for him or her. 1 didn't even see any of the candidates politicking on election day," Trogdon said. "Not knowing who the candidates are seems to be a big problem when election time is upon Elon," said Tom Niklcs, a former student government senator, who was defeated in the recent elections. "This year we had elections in the fall because a bill was passed to add new scats in the student government," said David Atkins, advisor to the student government. "This year we added 10 freshmen senator seats and four upper class scats." Atkins said. "The SGA represents the students, something everyone should be aware of," Atkins said. "There are a lot of things the students netd to know about the student government but they don't. 1 had no idea who was running for office or what their ideals were. Dr. Jim Barbour, associate professor of economics, will be teaching a travel course. The Economy of United Germany^ over winter term. This is a three credit hour course that can be used toward the society component of liberal studies. "It sounds dull, but we will be looking a lot more than just economics," Barbour said. "It will be politics, culture and economics rolled into one. It would be difficult to separate one from the rest" The days will be divided into three parts. One being spent "on task", one being spent in groups touring and sightseeing, and the other being left to each student to do as they see fit The first stop will be in Washington, D.C. for a few days. The students will visit foreign embassy’s where they will hope to gain a global (western) perspective of the reunification of Germany. Students will be encouraged to go and visit the National Gallery, the Library of Congress and many other sights of the capital. The next stop is Brussels. In 1988, the history department with the support of Dr. Bill Rich, started the Model UN Club. "Eton College’s Model United Nations Club is an excellent way for students to become involved in international politics," Mike Gallagher, club president, said. Dr. Rudy Zar/ar, faculty advisor for the club said, "The Model UN gives students insight and experience in international diplomacy." 2:ar/.ar said that students obtain leadership and learning experience while having fun in a club atmosphere. Last year the club attended local, regional, and national conferences. This year the club is attending two conferences. The club is going to Old Dominion University Oct. 26-28, to represent Egypt and the Republic of China as they were in the San Francisco conference of 1945. Model UN is participating in the Midwest Modern United Nations Conference in St. Louis, Mo., Feb. 21-25. "We will research the San Francisco Conference of 1945. reenact it. and also add our own leadership ideas and perspectives about the countries involved." Chris Bower, a senior at Elon. said. Bower is looking forward to ihe conference because. "It will be more clear-cut due to more of an influx of different and bigger schools who will have prior experience in the Model UN," Bower said. Zarear's long-term goal for the club is to take students to the Hague Model United Nations Conference in the Netherlands. See UN, Page 8
