Pa^e 11 GAME DAY: Sports Staff I^icks Lupo Toomer Fitts NOTRE DAME VS. MIAMI Lupo: A blown two-point conversion was all that kept the Hiuricanes from walking away from South Bend with a victory over the Irish in 1988, a mistake that cost Miami a shot at the national championship. This year, the two-point conversion will come into play only if the Hurricanes decide to nm up the score. The Hurricanes possess far too many weapons, both offensively and defensively for the Irish to contend; a hard hitting, relentless defense led by All America Russell Maryland, a fine-tuned offense featuring quarterback Craig Erickscm, and — a new luxury that the Hurricanes haven’t always enjoyed — an established running attack. Irish quarterback Rick Mirer had better have some more miracles up his sleeve, otherwise the Irish's already slim national champiosnship hopes will be crushM. Regardless of where the game is played, the Hurricanes should have no problem repeating last year’s 27-10 thumping. Toomer: No. 2 Miami vs No.5 Notre Dame is always a dog fight. The mere fact that football wizard Lou Holtz, had his troops Out Sunday for practice shows how badly Lou wants to win. I ^’t say that I blame him due to fact that the winner of this game will possibly play Virgina for the National Championship. The last two years the home team has won the game. (Notre Dame fans this hurts me as much as it hurts you!) Look for the cycle to he broken, as the home team will win this year. Miami's *efense will cause soph more Quarterback Rick Mirer serious P*t)blems and the lethal Hurricane offense will showcase it's many Weapons. Look for Miami quarterback Craig Erickson to ^'^e a good day. ^^i 21, Notre Dame 17. Fitts: Easily college football's game of the year. Since this year's matchup is being played in South Bend, the outcome could go either way. Even though Miami is the stronger team overall, don't be surprised if this 3ne ends in a tie. IVORLD SERIES: CINCINATTI VS. OAKLAND Lupo: For the third straight year, the best of the National League West faces the Oakland Athletics in the World Series. And for the second straight year, Oakland will crush the National League pennant winner. Just like the Giants in 1989, the Reds face a similar problem in 1990: lack of solid starting pitching. The Reds don't have a starter the caliber of the Dodgers' Orel Hershiser, capable of stifling the heavy Oakland bats, as evidenced by the Dodgers’ four game to one Series victory in 1988. The R^ can talk all they want about the so-called "Nasty Boys", but Norm Charlton, Rob Dibble and Randy Myers will be of little use when the starters get blown out early. If the Reds win one game, it would be a miracle. For humanitarian purposes, this one should be halted after three games. Toomer: Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Rickey Henderson, Willie McGee, Dave Stewart, Walt Weiss....shall I continue? These are a few of the many reasons why Oakland will repeat as World Scries Champs. Now I'm fully aware of what happened on Tuesday night with the Reds winning the first game. However, despite the win "Oakland repeats as World Champs." Fitts: If any team in baseball is capable of dethroning the defending World Series champion Oakland A's, it's the Cincinatti Reds. The Reds possess all the ingredients to stage a stunning upset. Look for Cincinatti to pull out all the stops as they shock the A's in six games. 11 • •fit' ' • • CAROUSEL NIGHT CLUB 1-85 S.
