Sports Page X 1 Women's soccer team headed to South regional Deborah Durkee Chip Lupo The Pendulum A trip to the NAIA National Women's Soccer tournament is within the grasp of the Fightin' Christian's women's soccer team. But coach Rob Brewer's team must survive the Southern regionals in Rome, Ga., which begin Saturday. The Christians, 12-3-1, ranked fourth in the nation, rolled through the District 26 playoffs last week with relative ease, shutting out St. Andrews of South Carolina, 4-0 in the championship game. The District championship catapults the Christians alongside arch rival Berry (Ga.) College in the first game of the regional playoffs. Berry, the tournament's host school, and the Christians battled to a 0-0 tie on Oct. 21. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. For Berry, which comes into the regional at 11-5-1 and tied for the top spot in the NAIA women's soccer polls, playing on their home field could make things a bit tough for the fourth seeded Christians. Berry ended Elon's championship hopes last year in the regionals. Kelly Gonteski, a senior from Ringwood, N.J. is looking forward to the confrontation. "It will be a very good game," she said. "Hopefully we can get past Berry." Amy Melander, a junior midfielder from Bowdoinham, Maine, can’t wait for the opportunity to face Berry again. "Berry and Elon have always been very intense rivals as far as soccer goes...they've always been the team that's kept us from winning the regionals. We just feel like we have a score to settle with them." Melander is also quick to dismiss the home field advantage factor. "We know going into the game, what the situation is going to be. Obviously there's going to be a lot of Berry fans there. They’re going to do everything in their power to try to break us down by taunting. Most people on this team, I think, can tie ;- '!• "Beny and Elon have always been intense rivals as far as soc cer goes...we feel like we have a score to settle with them.” - Amy Melander themselves away from that. When I hear comments like that, it kinda makes me me play better." "I don't think the fact it's going to be on their 'turf is going to be that much of a factor." If Elon wins the grudge match, they will face the winner of the regional's second game between second seeded Boca Raton (Fla.) and the region’s third seed Huntingdon (Ala.). The winner of the South Regional goes on to the six-team NAIA National Championship at Erskine (S.C.) College November 19-23. For Melander, however, the first task is to get by Berry and to not look too far ahead. "One thing that Coach Brewer has tried to emphasize this year is to take one game at a time." She admits learning that from experience. "My freshman year we had regionals here at Elon and our first game was against Green Mountain, which on paper, we were better. But, we knew if we beat Green Mountain, we'd have to play Berry to go to the nationals. We were so concentrated on Berry, assuming that we were going to beat Green Mountain, that Green Mountain beat us. A lot of us learned lessons from that...you really need to get past Team A before you can face Team B." Despite such a conservative outlook, Melander can't help but feel good about the team's chances. "If we get through this weekend, I think we could win nationals. If we beat Berry, our team will be at such a peak and such a high that I don't think anyone can stop us." - « •rf 'iiif hi'iii'iA rti'.* fj Heather WhitehouM/Xhe Pendulum Kelly Gonteski slide tackles on oncoming Berry defender In an Oct. 21 matchup, faces Berry Saturday in the South regionals in Rome, Ga. The same as its been every year since Michael came into the league. The man has no help. Jordan, who has been robbed of three NBA MVP awards in the past four years, will once again be forced to spend the offseason wondering^ hov^,he can handle ihe Pistons one-on-five.
