Elon College purchased an L-
shaped tract of land on the cast
side of Power Line Road Jan. 18.
The 27.6 acre tract was
jointly sold to the college by
^cggy and Brannack Bell, and
William E. Loy. The amount of
the purchase was not given out on
the request of the previous owners.
The land will provide a link
between the East Campus
Apartments and main campus. The
land was purchased for future use

Assistant to the President,
Robert Anderson, said the
purchase of the land was part of
the Board of Trustees' long-range
property plan. "The Board of
Trustees has a policy to buy land
adjacent to the college at its
appraised value when it is
available," Anderson said.
"This acquisition is a major
step to ensuring Elon College's

Young said.
Director of Administrative
Services, Jim Johnson, said the
Board of Trustees don't want to
create a campus of bricks and
pavement. "We want to keep green
space around," Johnson said. "A

The Pendulum
Elon College is hosting a
convocation to honor Dr. Isabella
Cannon as one of North Carolina's
most distinguished leaders on
Monday, Feb. 18. She will be
awarded the Elon College
Medallion. The convocation will
take place at 8pm in the Fine Arts
Theatrc,
Dr. Cannon is the first
woman to receive the medallion,
an award which represents
longstanding and generous support
of the college. Dr. J. Earl
Danieley and Mr. Thad Eure were
the first two recipients of the
modal.
To commemorate Cannon's
establishment of the Isabella
Cannon Leadership Endowment
Fund, an Isabella Cannon
Leadership medallion is being
designed and cast for all leadership

When the time docs come for
something to be done with the
land, Johnson says it will not be a
spur of the moment decision. "A
lot of thought, input and
discussion will take place first.
For those students who are
worried the administration will do
as it pleases, Johnson says he
doesn't know of a time when a
suggestion for some project came
through and it was just flat out
rejected.
"Students, Ed Boswell and
Laural Underwood, were student
representatives along with others
from other departments, on the
Facilities Planning Committee,"
Johnson said.
Johnson said the land could be
used for intramural or athletic
fields, but he thinks it will
probably be used for housing.
"We are looking to the
future," Johnson said. "If someone
hadn't looked towards the future 50
years ago and bought what is now
North Campus, we wouldn't have
a North Campus."

Kansai Gaidai and Elon
College will be exchanging
students for the 1991 - 92 school
year. Elon College sophomore.
Sallie Wolfe, will be studying at
Kansai Gaidai while Satoko
Takeda will be coming to the
United States to study at Elon
College.
They will both be juniors at
their new schools.
This direct exchange is a first
for Elon College. Associate Dean
Of Academic Affairs, Bill Rich,
said the exchange agreement was
signed last summer. The direct
exchange program means that the
students will pay tuition at their
home schools. The only expenses
that they will encounter arc airfare
and personal spending money.
The agreement was set up to
where neither student will lose
their class standing. Rich said
that officials from both schools
will be helping their students
arrange their schedule so tl»ai they
do not take any unnecessary
courses.
Rich said that there is rtx)m

space limitations are imposed
because Kansiii Gaidai is at filiated
with approximately 100 colleges
in the United States. They can
only accomodate a small number
of students from each of their
affiliated schools,
