Editorials February 21,1991 Viewpoint Support troops, attend rally The crisis in the Gulf continues and the threat of a ground war has escalated in the past couple of days. More and more, the war has hit close to home. Just recently, the first soldier to return home after being killed in action was laid to rest in Washington, in Arlington Cemetery, among others who gave their lives for their country. And it looks as if it could be just the beginning. Even closer, Elon has a number of students and alumni in Saudi Arabia. Efforts have been taken to generate support and encouragement through letters and kind words. Earlier in February, a support rally was held in downtown Burlington. 15,000 people demonstrated their support for the troops by marching and carrying American flags. Thousands of signs decorated with pictures of loved ones in unifoim asked for love and support. Songs and prayers filled the atmosphere: American Patriotism at its finest. History was in the making. Some people may think Buriington is a nothing town and mock Alamance County's motto, "link to the future," but seeing 15,000 people covering the streets from end to end, singing, praising and praying for peace, could bring tears to anyone’s eyes. To see it, is to believe it. On Saturday, Feb. 23, there will be a support rally in Gibsonville. About 3,000 - 4,000 people are expected to attend. History will be made once again. Elon students and faculty should participate in the rally. Despite opposing views about the war, the American soldiers need all the support they can get. Imagine if the Elon College community contributed thcirsupport, there would be close to 8,000 people present. Let's not have another man or woman laid to rest. May they return home soon. I've come up with a few of my own. Instead of a golf course, why don't we shoot the works and build our very own country club? Better yet, why don't we build another Disney Land? How about building Fred Young a second home? How about the "Elon International Airport?" All kidding aside, let's see something that is useful for the students, and not something to simply help Elon's "Gilded Cage" image. Here's y^^'xr ticket- Hear the drummer ' x wicket." Ahhh. This is African American History Month, a specific periodic period to highlight and celebrate the many who helped build this nation. In my observation, as African American Cultural Society President, it is clear to see that America has a very serious problem- Not only does America have a serious problem, but our people have a serious problem. African American Elon College is headed for SELF DESTRUCTION. We are slipping into a stale of slumber. Some of us distance ourselves from our heritage, while others don’t see the importance of reflection. We tend to join groups or form cliques and fail to support each other. There is nothing wrong with joining an organization, because we all have I Dan Ridley is the President of the African American Cultural Society. other. Remember, when you point a finger at somebody- you point three at yourself. We all came over on the ship- so why have the separation? . , r When we look at our state of despair we just can't look at ourselves. It would be wise to look in the direction of the people who make all the decisions. We have a low amount of African American professors and instructors. There is stronger recruitment of the African American student-athlete than the African American student. We also have a diet that has a strong emphasis on pork and fried foods. While we are looking at the problems, let us glance for -.a a similar goal, but the *^oment at the Caucasian student methodology is different- Word to ^ wonder who said that when Malcolm X. something says black or has I see problems when we talk something to do with black it's a testulaofcsiahu anl dPMga'di ;;^m.£Qi:^hitG:tQ^ ftgg "There is a stronger recruit ment of the Afri can American student-athlete than the African American stu dent.^* is absurd, because knowledge and understanding is the key to a change. I don't see that change coming soon, especially when you are in a place that has a policy of not keeping some of it's influential professors and a student body that allocates a policy of RUSHING off and SPORTing around with no care in the world. If many had their eyes on the prize in the 60s- what do we have our eyes on now- the disguise. Oh yeah, thank you for the return to 1965 Homecoming. You really made me feel at home. Home in Hell!
