■ Dr. Malvin Artley, retired
Professor of Music, is
recuperating from Gullain-Barre
syndrome which has left him
paralyzed. He is in the
rehabilitation unit at Moses
Cone Hospital. His address is
Moses Cone Hospital, Room
4029, 1200 N. Elm Street,
Greensboro, N.C. 27401.
■ Dr. William W. Sloan died
at Memorial Hospital in
Burlington, Sunday, Mar. 3,
after several years of failing
health. Sloan was a retired
Professor of Bible and
Religious Education. He joined
the Elon faculty in 1947.
Sloan dormitory is named in
memory of Dr. Sloan and his
wife. Memorial gifts may be
made to the Bessie P. and
W.W. Sloan Scholarship Fund
at Elon. A memorial service
will be held at a later date.
THE PAST

visited Elon. He spoke on the
changes needed in the political
campaign spending, and the
arms race.

The construction of a new
homeless shelter is underway.
This shelter will replace the old
one.
The old shelter started off as
the administrative building for the
Burlington schools, then turned
into the Police Department and for
the last four years has been the
homeless shelter.
The Allied Churches of
Alamance County (ACAC), are
sponsoring the building of the
new shelter which will cost
approximately $400,000.
Seventy percent of the funds
are coming from the business
community in Burlington and
Alamance County and the other 30
percent is coming from the
ACAC.

The shelter will house the homeless and provide a day care for the
elderly.

from the community.
"The community has been
very supportive," Hunter said.
"The city council and mayor have
been very cooperative to work
with."
Hynter said they arc hoping to
get into the 12,000 square foot
building sometime around June.
According to Elon College
Chaplain Richard McBride, the
new facility will be used for four
main purposes.

Elon’s chaptcr of Habitat for
Humanity is building a new home
and they need your help.
Elon celebrated the
construction of this new home in
a "groundbreaking" ceremony
Sunday in Whitley Auditorium.
Richard McBride, chaplain of
Elon, presided over tlie ceremony.
The ceremony was conducted to
celebrate the construction of the
new home.
McBride said Habitat For
Humanity is a non-profit
organization based on Christian
beliefs and a belief in helping
others. He is excited about the
project and said that when people
actually see the family the house
is being built for. that makes the
job more worthwhile. It makCvS it

Ellen Gagnon, assistant to
the Dean of Admissions and
Financial Planning and coordinator
and treasurer of Omicron Delta
Kappa (ODK), was reading off her
list of 1990-91 ODK initiates:
"Denise Adams, Denise is the
president of the Peace Group, the
Treasurer of the Art History
Society, and a two year member of
the Liberal Arts Forum. Denise
published a poem entitled "Firefly
Valley" and is involved in EnAct
and Amnesty International.
