Furman C. Moseley, a 1956
graduate of Elon College has been
selected as the speaker f(v the
college's 101st Commencement.
The ceremony will take place on
Saturday May 18 at 10:30 am.
Moseley came to Elon in 19S3
on a football scholorship. While
at Elon, he was very active in
campus activities. He was a
member of Kappa Psi Nu. He
played football for four years and
majored in History.
In 19SS, he was selected as
the Chief Commencement
Marshal. During his senior year,
he served as president of the
student body. After graduating
from Elon, Moseley served in the
Marines for three years. Moseley
serves as president of Simpson
Investment, a Seattle, Washington
based firm that is comprised of
Simpson Paper, Simpson Timber
and Pacific Western Extruded
Plastics.
In 1981 Moseley received the
Distinguished Alumni Award from
Elon. In 1988, Moseley
participated in Eton's Business
Leaders Seminar, a program
sponsored by the Love School of
Business. He talked about
Simpson Paper Companies'
descision to build a $S(M-$600
Furman Mosoley
million pulp plant in Chile.
In 1989, he served on the
board of two Fortune 500
companies: Eaton Corporation and
Owens Corning Fiberglass.
Moseley will be speaking to a
group of students who will
become the largest graduating
class in the college's history.
Records in the Registrars office
indicate that 613 students are
scheduled to receive diplomas; 588
bachelors degrees, 21 MBA
degrees and four M£d.
Dr. Fred Young described
Moseley as being one of the
college's most successful graduates
in terms of his leadership roles.
Moseley is involved with several
civic, cultural and government
organizations.
Young said that the college
has been wanting Moseley to be a
commencement speaker for some
time.
Moseley's speech highlights a
exciting time for this year's
graduating seniors.
The Baccalaurete Service is
scheduled for Tuesday, May 7 ai
9:30a.m. Dr. Susan
Thistlethwaite, professor of
theology and culture at Chicago
Theological Seminary and a
United Church of Christ clergy
has been invited to give the
Baccalaureate speech.
Thursday, May 16, graduating
seniors will officially be
recognized as members of the
Alumni Association at the annual
Senior picnic, a event scheduled to
held at the Lodge.
Friday, May 17, selected
members of the senior class will
have the opportunity to display
their hobbies and talents in the
Senior Showcase. The event is
scheduled to begin at 8pm in the
Fine Arts Theatre.
Graduation morning will
begin with a continental breakfast
at Scott Plaza at 8:30 a.m.
Graduates, with cap and gown in
hand must report to Whitley
Auditorium by 9:15 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m., the graduation
ceremonies are scheduled to begin
on the lawn in front of West
Residence Hall.
