Special Olympics: a
success, despite weather
Jennifer ,Atkins
The Pendulum
The sky threatened rain, and
an unusual April chill filled the
air, but to 250 handicapped
individuals from Alamance
County the weather didn't seem
to matter.
These individuals participated
in field and track activities in the
Alamance-Burlington Special
Olympics held at Elon College
Friday April 19.
Each athlete was matched
with a volunteer from Elon
College or the community who
basically made sure they got to
their events on time and had fun.
At around 9 a.m. buses started
pulling up at Elon's Bakauias
soccer field loaded with
handicapped children and adults
from all over Alamance county.
Excitement and smiles could
be seen on almost every athlete's
face as they got off the buses.
"I've never seen faces gleam
.j much," said volunteer
coordinator Carin Hess.
With a huge smile on her tace
athlete Marketta Thomas found
her volunteer, Elon fehnj^

hand immediately.
"Are you ready to have some
fun?" Barr asked.
"Yeah!" shouted Maiketta.
At 9:45 a.m. the opening
ceremonies were held, and like in
the international Olympics,
Special Olympian Jerry Faucette
lit the Olympic torch to begin
the games.
Freshman volunteer Cheryl
Warren's athlete, a 29-year-old
woman named Jamie, won first
place in the softball throw event
Warren said she'd made a
friend for life in Jamie.
Warren said she has sent
Jamie a postcard congratulating
her on her win.
Just as the athletes finished
their events around noon the rain
came in a downpour. Everyone
ran for shelter under tents on the

Overwhelming support from
members of the Elon College
community prompted Carter
Smith to run for president of the
Student Government Association.
This same support scared
away anyone who thought about
challenging Smith for the
president's office. Thursday April
18, Smith was elected S.G.A.
president
"Running unopposed is a
great compliment. I have been
overwhelmed by the support that I
have received. I was not going to
run for president until I saw that
the support was there," Smith
said.
Smith is wasting no time in
getting ready for next year. He
