Arts and Entertainment Page Return Engagement McCutcheon delivers social messages in folk music Dee Dee Carowan The Pendulum John McCutcheon, one of America's most renowned folk musicians, will be performing at Elon's Fine Arts Theaue on Monday, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. McCutcheon is a social activist and accomplished instrumentalist. Always a popular Elon favorite, this will be McCutcheon's third concert appearance here in four years. McCutcheon is well-known for the strong social messages of his songwriting, his storytelling and interactive approach with the audience, and most of all, his mastery of the rare hammer dulcimcr. Professor Anne Cassebaum describes McCutcheon as a "very committed person whose music raises a lot of social issues, yet includes a lot of humor," McCutcheon is very popular in speaking and performing because he is "very informal and informative," Cassebaum says. Having recently returned from a landmark summer concert tour of the Soviet Union, McCutcheon will have the opportunity to share his experiences with Elon students in Yeager Recital Hall on Monday at 3:30 p.m. McCutcheon is the first of this fall's four speakers selected by students as part of Elon's Young Artists series. The series is sponsored by the Liberal Arts Forum. Admission is free. Admission to the concert is by ticket only. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Fine Arts Box Office from 12:30-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, call the box office at 584-2199. Band Match-A- Sek, will perform its first collegiate concert at Elon's Alamance courtyard on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. Chaplain Richard McBride said of the performance, "We arc trying early in the semester to have a series of programs sponsored by Elon Religious Life that signal to students that there is an active religious life on campus." The five-piece band, led by singer and songwriter John Machacek, is affiliated with Christ Church of Graham and plays at many area churches. "We have such a focus in this culture in going for the big names... that we forget to value the folks in the next town over who are putting their hearts and souls into something they believe in," McBride said. i Oruy 'h 39QQ vermonm m Date: , September 9,10,11 Sd: $20 Place: Campus Shop ac5 Hitmwtihyouf lost««fepi«jnmivTfafMd««fcSt»ouri.uit»ili>t mnuJtamnoKclotiylnvwcalWitbootoore JohnMachacok
