Elon College awards medallions Elon College presented its most prestigious award, the college medallion, during its faculty/staff convocation on Aug. 19. Retired admissions staff member Jacqueline Matlock and retired English professor Mary Ellen Priestley were the recipients. "The medallion is bestowed upon faculty, staff and friends whose service to the college has been unusually long and of unusually high quality," President Fred Young said. Matlock worked in the college's admissions office from 1948 until 1988. She began as a secretary, and as the staff grew, became assistant director of a(bnissians. Matlock worked under five different dirccton of admissions. Young credited her with having "trained more admissions directors than anybody else in the world." Priestley joined the faculty in 1969. Young credited her with helping suidenis create the college newspaper. The Pendulum and overseeing its progress until her retirement in 1982. According to Young, Priestley's leaching and support of journalism led to the creation of a major separate from English.
