Elon will show improvement this year It's that time of year again and as ABC's sports senior football announcer Keith Jackson would say, "Ohhh Nelly, it's Futball time!!" Things seem to be looking up for the Fightin'Christians. 1 think this is Elon's year to silence its critics and return to the glory days of the early '80s when winning was the norm rather than the exception. Head coach Leon Hart has been here three years and now it's lime to show and prove. We saw glimpses of what ihe team could do last year; however, this year we want io see the whole picture. The Christians are picked to linish second in the conferencc behind ever present Carson-Ncwman. I feel the key to this year's success is the play of quarterback Heath Heweit. Hewett passed for 1,661 yards Isst year and this year has a speedy target in Joe Randolph, ^ho glides along with 4.2 speed. Also, between Bobby Johnson and Elliot Armstrong, ^ l&ilback situation should be Ted Toomer a good one for Hart. Defensively, the Christians should be tough. Losing only one starter from Iasi year s defense should produce a bunch of talented athletes that have come together into a swarming group of ucklers and arc ^customed to playing together. The Christians will open uD the season against an explosive Wofford with an exceptional quarterback m Shawn Graves. I ihmk us crucial for Elon's defense to set the tone for the season this year as it did last year. Al considered, Elon should be m for one of its best seasons ma long while. The Pick* ^ Ted’t fW* Notre Dame vs. Indiana This will be no contest as the Irish practice up on the Hooisers for next week's matchup against Michigan. Washington vs. Dallas I'm glad to see that this is once more a game that will soon carry some significance. Dallas is much improved and in for a good season; however, they will be scalped by the Skins on Monday night Keith Parsons' picks: Notre Dame vs. Indiana I agree with Ted's pick for this game, as the Irish are just too powerful for lU. However, it will be a tight game. Pick; Notre Dame Washington vs. Dallas Dallas is vastly improved, and a|q;)ears to be headed in the right direction under Jimmy Johnson. The "Dead"skins' best years are behind them, although they did destroy the Detroit Lions on q)ening day. Look for the Cowboys' defense to harrass Mark Rypien all night, leading to a Dallas victory. Pkk: Dallu Football team prepares for opener at Wofford Rogers Harrison The Pendulum Head Coach Leon Han feels that the days of losing arc over. The Fighting Christians finished the 1990 football season with a 5-6 record, which was a healthy improvement from the 1-9 rccord in the 1989 campaign. Elon kicks off the 1991-92 season on Saturday when the team travels to Spartanburg, S.C. to face the Terriers of Wofford College. "Wofford has a preiiy good team,” says running back Darryl Humbles. "In order to win, wc have to stop their quarterback." Hart is optimistic about the upcoming season because his team is returning 49 lettermen. Defensively, Elon lost only one player. The defense is led by captain Jack Duval, Lamar Adams and Tim Woodle. Last season. Woodle led the team in lacklcs with 69, while Adams had 64 and Duval had 37. Offensively, Elon will look to quarterback Heath Hcwctt, tailback Bobby Johnson and wide receiver Kelly Holder to lead the team. In last year's maichup, Wofford used its potent running game to thrash Elon 26-7. On Saturday, WolTord's offensive attack will be led quarterback Shawn Graves. Mike Ayers, Wofford head coach, feels his Terriers are at a big disadvantage because they have only two starters returning on offense. "I feel Elon possesses great team speed. Hewett and (Bobby) Johnson arc real assets for the Christians," Ayers said. Saturday's game will be played at Wofford's on-campus sta^um.
