Editorials September 26, 1991 Viewpoint What does right mean? The difference between being legally right and morally right is the difference between the law and your guL Last week Angel Herlihy had to leave Elon. She got caught between those two definitions of right Elon might have had the legal right to send her p%:king. but that doesn't make what the school did right. Herlihy could not afford to pay her fall tuition because a loan did not come through. She said she informed the college that it was doubtful the loan would be approved before she came to Elon. She said she was told to come anyway and the college wouW help her out The college helped her out of $2,016 plus $209 for books and sent her packing back to Delaware the same day she told them the loan had been denied. What happened here? Elon sells itself as a small school which takes a personal interest in the student as an individual. At the same time, Elon wants to grow. If that growth means that students get shuffled around like they would at any big university, then perhaps that growth is not in the best interests of the school. Elon will no longer be a special place, just another depersonalized community where no one knows each other and no one caies. Elon cannot afford for that to happen. Sometimes progress is a step backwards. It is time for Ekxi to step backwards and take a hard lode at what this incident means. Is this the way of the future here? Elon cannot afford to forget about the Angel Herlihys on campus. Elon cannot aff(»d to become an institution devoid of human understanding. This Christian school must remember its heritage and (he aim of Elon College as stated in the Academic Catak^: "...to give all students the oppmtunity to acquire; An understanding of their responsibilities and rights as citizens in a democratk: culture, and a recognition of the intrinsic worth of all individuals." Elon is entrusted with the minds and bodies of 3300 individuals. It must take better care of those individuals than it took care of Angel Heriihy. When you're legally right, you're right. But sometimes when you're right, you're wrong. WU'T KMOW Fear demons Student involvement can conquer freshman fears It has often been said that the mme things change, the more they stay the same, and this truly relates to college life. Although Ekm has gained 7% freshmen this year, they are experiencing some of the same fears and expectations that students forty years ago did. New students often have fears about failing in classes, career, and the fear of not being accepted into social circles. These fears could be compared to demons. The type of monster that cOTtinues to gnaw at you until you finally give into them. Freshmen can kill these fear demons by finding activities that interest, occupy and can benefit them in the real world. Many seniors have regretted that they have never joined certain clubs or organizations. To Charity Apple combat senior regrets, freshmen should try and take as much interest in extracurricular activities as possible. Yes. Elon has gained a reputation as being a beautiful school cm the exterior, but the student body needs some work. The lack of class support is very evident This can be improved through the class of 1995. This new class can make up for the mistakes made in the past, meanwhile overcoming any fears So much for the Elon family To the Editor: When I came to Elon I met a girl who was full of dreams! At the convocation, the class of 1992 speakers, Edwin Toone and Lisa Taschenberger showed that Elon does have a lot to offer upcoming students. Toone traveled to India and Taschenberger went to the Chesapeake Bay. Through these programs, students improve not only themselves, but the world around them. As the convocation speaker, Parker Palmo’ said, "Our biggest probtem is overcoming our fears, overwhelmed by the largeness of the worid and the tendency to be in a paralyzed state.* By working to combat fear demons, every member of the student body can improve their outlook towards themselves as well as Ekm. young lady left this room with her eyes full of tears and her dreams gone. So much for the "Elon family." Last week I lost a close friend. A bright, strong-willed Leisa Williams Sophomore (Aaf>el Herlihy's njommate)
