Sunday at 6 p.m., police went to the apartment of William Ganey with a warrant for arrest due to an assault charge. On Saturday night, Elon student Ian Macleod reported he was assaulted by Ganey. That night, Macleod was admitted to Alamance Memorial Hospital for treatment for a busted lip and ended up having reconstructive surgery. According to Dan Ingle, Chief of Elon College Police, when officers entered Ganey's apartment on Sunday with a warrant for arrest, a bong was in plain view. "Once he (the officer) observed the bong, that was sufficient probable cause to search. He had reasonable grounds to believe that there could be drugs on that property," Ingle said. Upon requesting permission to search, the officers found steroids, marijuana, and other drug pafaphemalia, according to police reports. Not only was Ganey arrested, but sophomores Calvin C. Hanchey and Alan A. Wright were as well, according to police reports. Possession of steroids is a felony offense, according to Detective Mike Woznick of the Elon College police department. "It's a felony” just because of the volume involved. And believe me, the volume was nothing really big; just enough to meet the criteria for being a felony," According to Woznick, more 100 dosage units were found. Ganey's charges include assault inflicting serious injury, as a result from the incident with Macleod, felonious possession of a controlled substance, and also possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released under $1,000 security bond. Both Wright and Hanchey are charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Unsecured bonds are set for them at $200 each. Both Ingle and Woznick said they determine ownership of the drugs through investigation. On Monday, James E. Hurst, 16, of 206 S. O'Kelly Ave., was arrested on six counts of breaking an entering, three counts of misdemeanor larceny and one count of felonious larceny, according to police reports. He is accused of breaking into 10 vehicles on September 21. From one of the vans, he allegedly took four guitars and two amplifiers valued at $3,000. The maximum penalty for first offense of a misdemeanor possession of marijuana is a $100 fine. The penalty for possession of drug paraphernalia is a two- year misdemeanor charge. The maximum penalty for steroids is five years and $500. Ingle and Woznick don’t feel Ashley Oaks is a prime target for drug busts. "I can't say it's (Ashley Oaks) any worse than any other apartment complex...I'm sure that problems come up at different times elsewhere...It could happen anywhere," Ingle said. What will happen to Ganey, Hanchey, and Wright’s academic career is still in question. According to Ron Klepxiyk, Dean of Academic Affairs, this case is "still under investigation and evaluation." Klepcyk said he needs clarification from the police before he decides to do anything. "Right now, we're in the process of evaluating the information to determine what the college will do." Vandalism is reported at sorority house Tricia Talbert The Pendulum Last week it was car break- ins, this weekend it was vandalism and destruction of property at the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority house in the Greek courtyard. Early Saturday morning between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. vandals stalked the house, entering through an unlocked back door. "We normally lock the back doors by 11 p.m. every night, but this weekend one of the girls left it unlocked when she came in," said Robyn Evers the sorority's house manager. The house was covered with powdered kool-aid mix, lemonade See Vandalism, Page 10
