Chris Shoffner joined Elon's staff after working with the Gibsonville Police Department. Richard Feeney brings 22 years of experience on the New York City Police Department with him to Elon. The other professional on the staff is currently serving his second year. Bob Mayfield, formerly of the Los Angeles Police Department's Vice and Narcotics Division, is supervising the new security team. "Collectively, we have more experience than some small police departments," said Security Chief Terry Creech when referring to himself and the other three professionals. The total years of experience for these four staff members adds up to 42 years. These new additions to the staff are part of the Security Department's move toward a more professional security staff with students working as a backup, Creech said. With security being a high priority on Elon's campus, he said that this move would "take Richard Feeney students out of the high-risk or liability" part of working for the Security Department. Creech said that he would like to see the staff at Elon become a campus police department, which would include having arrest powers, instead of being just a security force. The reason given for the possible change was that the Elon College Town Police Department could not always respond on time due to other calls they receive. Creech said that he has a good staff this year and has a "good nucleus of students" to work with YOUTH ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES I r#»« Hunger Spmcimlimt 3400 S. Church St. Burlington. All the effects of the Security Department's move toward a professional staff remains to be seen. After a survey of 300 students, only two said that they would object to the professionals carrying a firearm, and no one objected to the professionals carrying a nightstick and mace. A survey dealing with this issue will be coming out soon, Creech said.
