Sports October 31, 1991 Page 12 Ted Toomer Top Five Active "Auteur" Coaches 1 am a strong bclivcr in "Aulcur" coaches. This frcnch word is usally indcnlificd wilh film directors. The word means or implies that directors are the reason for a film's success and not the actors. Auteur directors also have their own style about the films they make which makes them unique. The same idea is true of coaches. There arc some coaches that simply know how to win. 5. Bobby Bowden- Bowden is known as the "river boat gambler". His style is disciplined but unpredictable. There is no limit to what he will do to win a game. His coaching style now has his team undefeated and on their way to a National Championship. 4. Tom Osborne- Osborne has been at Ncbraksa a while now and even though he's not winning the big games, he is still is a class act. Despite being in what some call a three team conference, he is one of the winningest presently coaching. 3. Howard Schellenburger - Other wise known as the "pide pippcr", he won at Miami and is turning Louisville around quickly. Schellenburger ain't just blowing smoke, this guy wins. 2. Joe Paterno - A proven winner and one that stresses discipline in his players. Nothing fancy, he just wins. When asked, "Why don't you get different uniforms" his reply was, "Why? Players win football games not uniforms." 1. Lou Holtz- Holtz is my all-time auteur coach. This guy is a proven winner. At Arkansas, and at N.C. State he won. His record at Notre Dame speaks for itself. How often do you find a coach that would bench his star player for missing one day of practice or for coming to practice late? A big, little man., a class act. What else can you say? This is not to say that there aren't many other great coachcs out there, but these arc the ones that have proven they can get he job done. 77 Hi Elliott Armstrong lunges for a touchdown against Catawba ErickGill/The Pendulum Elon loses another close game Ted Toomer The Pendulum For the third time this season Elon has failed to win a game in the closing seconds of the contest. "It's the third lime this season that we start slow and lost a game in the fourth quarter," said Elon Head Coach, Leon Hart. "The defense did a great job in the second half. They(Catawba) only made two first downs in the second half," After going into halftime trailing 20-7, Elon's defense shut out Catawba the entire second half. In the third quarter. Heath Hewett hit his favorite receiver, Kelly Holder with a 74 yard touchdown pass that made the score 20-14. The score remained 20-14 until late in the fourth quarter with Elon on it's four yard line. It was a fourth-and-one play. The pass from Hewett sailed too high over Holder's head thus canceling Elon's chances of lying the game and potentially winning with the extra point "It frustrating to me to see us go through this. The question asked to me was, 'Do I feel sorry for the team' ?" Hart said. "My answer was no, I don't feel sorry for the team. We put ourselves in the predicament." Even though Hart is frustrated with the losing, he isn't upset with the players. "I'm not mad at the players, we just allowed ourselves to get in a hole. But one of the positive things about this team is that we've refused to give up," when asked. "I came here to win championships. I have tried to instill in the team not to quit, and I have no intentions of quitting myself." Elon's next home game will be against Gardner-Webb for homecoming weekend. Hart feels they really have to be up for this contest. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Burlington Memorial Stadium. Haggard Ave. 449-0101 Picks of the Week Records: Ted (13-6) Keith (10-9) Houston vs. Washington Ted- I am a big fan of Warren Moon and I really think that the Oilers are a much improved team. However, Washington will win the game and finish the regular seaon with a perfect record. Keith- Tough game. The Oilers have the AFC's best defense, along with the second-best offense. The Skins have been unstoppable, but I think they will fall this weekend. I look for Houston, behind a late Warren Moon TD pass to Haywood Jefferies, to hand Washington its first loss. Detroit vs Chicago Keith- Although my heart lies with the Lions, I can't continue to pick ignorant upsets. If I do, Ted might get further ahead. I am going with the Bears and Neal Anderson this week. Who knows? Ted- Barry Sanders, need I say more? When Detroit gets a stronger defense, watch out! Last week's victory over Dallas was no fluke. Look for Detroit to beat the Bears. Giants vs. Philadelphia Keith- Neither one of these teams is where they expected to be. Both are close to being out of the playoff race, with the Eagles probably already gone. I think the Giants will win this game simply because of Jeff Hostetler is a much better player than either Jim McMahon or Jeff Kemp of the Eagles. Don't worry Philly fans, Randall Cunningham will be back next year. Ted- Although Philadelphia has had problems this year, I feel an upset in the making. Last week, the Giants lost a tough game to I the Skins and they are vulnerable to be beaten again. The Eagles will win the game in a tough defensive battle. Stay tuned for next week's guest picker I
