The game begins at 1 p.m. ■ On Tuesday, the Elon College Counseling and Support Staff is sponsoring a seminar titled, "What does an Etomologist Do?" The process of choosing a major will be discussed. The program begins at 7 p.m. in the lounge of Carolina dorm. ■ On Wednesday, the Student Union Board is sponsoring a lip sync contest with comedian Mark Nizer. The action begins at 8 p.m. in Whitley Auditorium. THE PAST One Year ago: Republican Senator Jesse Helms defeated Democratic candidate Harvey Gantt on jgjlovember 6, to win a fourth t^rm of office. Helms obtained 52 percent of the vote. Two years ago: Former tennis star Arthur Ashe spoke at Elon on March 1, 1989. Four years ago: Former U.S. senator Eugene McCarthy spoke at Elon on November 5, 1987. Nineteen years ago: Stevie Wonder appeared in concert at Elon on October 20, 1972. Homecoming 1991 Tri Sigma's Cathy Miller is crowned Tricia Talbert The Pendulum Elon's football team may not have come out on top this weekend at the Homecoming game, but Cathy Miller and Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority were winners. Miller removed her hat and replaced it with a crown as she was awarded 1991 Homecoming Queen during the halftime celebration. The Homecoming Queen was determined by a combination of events which took place during last week, all relating to the week's theme, "Mardi Gras at Elon." Dig winter term in the Baliamas Jennifer Hudson The Pendulum Students now have the chance to travel to the Bahamas during winter term in a new study abroad program. The spccial class in Caribbean Archaeology includes field U'ips to the beach, historical sites, the New World Museum and other areas on San Salvador Island. Dr. Perry Gnivecki, a part-time Sociology professor, teaches this course. According to Professor Gnivecki, the Lucayan-Taino contact site on San Salvador Island is a significant area because it is endangered by beach erosion. Archaeologists only have a portion of the site to work on and make discoveries before it eventually disappears into the See Bahamas, Page 6 Lederman: 'We are a nation at risk' Jennifer Cowman The Pendulum Dr. Leon Lederman, 1988 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, drew a large crowd Wednesday night at the Fine Arts Theatre. He spoke about the decline of science education and literacy in the country. The question is, "Are we illiterate?" According to Lederman, we have a lot of work to do concerning illiteracy in science and math. "We are a nation at risk," Lederman said. "We don't have the ability to solve crucial problems that will affcct our children and our children's children." Lederman said that such See Lederman, Page 10
