THE NDULUM Volume XVIII, Number 11 Serving the Elon Collejje Community November 22, 1991 THIS WEEK ■ On Saturday at 10 p.m., Jim Barber, ventriloquist- comedian, will be performing in McEwen Dining Hall. ■ Elon's men's basketball team hosts High Point College on Saturday. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. ■ Elon's Gospel Choir will be performing on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall. ■ Thanksgiving vacation begins Tuesday afternoon after classes end. THE PAST Nineteen years ago: Elon's first women's basketball team authorized for intercollegiate competition, began play in 1972. Twenty-nine years ago: Lyndon Johnson, former president of the United States, delivered the Founder's Day address at Elon in 1962. Twenty-five years ago: On Parent's Day, November 5, 1966, dedication ceremonies were held for the William S. Long Student Center as well as Brannock, Barney and Hook dormitories. Sixty-eight years ago: Elon's administration building burned down on January 18, 1923. Theft in Duke building Murray Glenn The Pendulum .Three Wolfe Stereo Microscopes valued between $3,000 and $3,500 were stolen from a lab in Duke building. The microscopcs were reported missing to the Elon College Police Department early Tuesday morning. According to police reports, the microscopcs were last seen Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. Sergeant Agnew of the Elon College Police Department said that the science lab showed no sign of forced entry. He speculated that entry was made through an unlocked door or with a key. "We have a number of upper level classes with labs that require students to comc back and finish up their work, " said Hugh Fields, a biology teacher. "The dilemma for us is that we need to have the equipment accessible for students but we also need safe storage space for our equipment." "Stereo microscopcs arc used to see three dimensions of an object," Fields said. "Monocular microscopcs allow you to only see one dimension." Terry Crecch, Elon College director of security said that crimes of this nature are very difficult to See Theft, Page 10 Beck Pool renovations are nearing completion Charity Apple The Pendulum Those who enjoy swimming have had to stay on dry land for several months because Beck Pool has been closed for renovations. Rex Waters, director of Campus Recreation at Elon said that the renovations began in May and they have lasted longer than anyone had expected. According to Waters, the pool renovations are completely separate from those scheduled to take place in Alumni Gym. The pool was in need of improvement.
