A. meeting will be held on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Senate Room of j Long Student Center. ■ On Thursday, Ron Irons and Sara March Barber from Troon Advertising in Greensboro will be speaking about their careers at 7 p.m. in the T.V. studio. ■ The Men’s Lacrosse team plays at home on Saturday against Wake Forest. The game begins at 3:30 p.m. ■ Elon Volunteers is looking for people willing to help put on puppet shows for area elementary students. Looking for a job riob Whiteside / The Pendulum Record number of employers attend job fair Jennifer Cowman The Pendulum A record number of emptoyers were present at Career Fair on Tuesday in Alumni Gym. According to Karen Thompson, placement director at Elon's Career Planning and Placement Center, 48 recruiters from 32 organizations showed up Tuesday. "This is the largest number of recruiters we’ve ever had," Thompson said. Thompson said she sends out about 250 invitations a year and eventually gets about 30 companies to come. This year, only one company cancelled. Thompson said that 17 of the 32 companies represented on Tuesday were tooking for any type of liberal arts degree. Thompson said she gets directories of companies from different associations and tries to compile a well-balanced list to f-'- ^ i-T t J t •’ •• Rob Whiteside / The Pendulum ensure a successful Career Fair each year. Thompson went on to say she felt good about the turnout. Elon students are lucky to have a college sponsored career fair to participate in. Duke doesn’t hold one, and Wake Fwest is starting one next year. Compared to larger schools, Elon’s ratio of organizations to number of students also stands high. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State average about 100 organizations for 23,000 students. Thompson went on to say that die attended a carew fair this year in Washington called ’Career's ’92", also held in Atlanta, Chicago, and New York. This event had 40 companies talking to students from about 40 different schools. The personnel executives polled had different opinions on the state of the economy. John Brothers, Branch Manager for F.N. Wolf & Co., Inc. investment bankers, said because of the interest rates, ”Our company is booming." Brothers went on to say that he believes the nation will start seeing the early stages of recovery toward the end of the summer. He thinks the revival will be spurred by one more cuts in interest rates. Also, Brothers said because 1992 is an election year, politicians will be trying to boost the economy in order to ensure that they will have another term in office. On the other hand, Meg Fary, Personnel Coordinator for WFMY-TV in Greensboro, said that "regardless of the economy, this is a competitive field." Fary says the suident specializing in the technical area "will have the added edge" in getting a job. Right now, WFMY has no openings. Fary said on-air jobs are "few and far between." Seniors give loan assistance Murray Glenn The Pendulum The class of 1992 decided that the best gift they could leave is a gift to the student body. Beginning in the fall, students in financial need will receive help via the senior class gift, an Emergency Loan Assistance Fund. The program was created by students to help students. The program was formally announced in a senior class meeting held Tuesday morning. "We are not trying to take the place of any federal financial aid program," said Jim Bush, assistant director alumni and parent relations. "We are a supplement." According to Bush, the fundraising goal of the project is to get at least 250 members of the senior class to give $25. The education initiative includes a $57 billion, five-year higher education package which would extend more financial aid to lower and middle income families. Joel Speckhard, director of financial planning at Elon College, believes the passage of this bill will be positive for many Elon students. The college currently has 492 See Aid, Page 9
