THE NDULIM Volume XVIII, Number 21 THIS WEEK ■ The Elon College Annual Awards Day Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 1, ai 3:30 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall. Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. A reception will be held on the terrace immediately following the ceremony. ■ A faculty dance contest will be held on Friday, May 1, at 8:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. This concert will include a variety of choreographic works by Jane Wellford, Rosemary Howard and Betty Pel ley. They will be joined by a guest choreographer. M The office of the Provost and Senior Vice President would like to remind graduating seniors who live off campus to check their commuter mailboxes on a regular basis. In the coming weeks, all students should be receiving information pertinent to graduation. ■ Today, the baseball team travels to Gardner-Webb College to participate in the South Atlantic Conference tournament. The tournament runs through Sunday. ■ On Wednesday, Judy Goldman, author of Holding Back Winter, will read from her works on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Large Lounge of Long Student Center. THE PAST One Year Ago: Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Mu were 1 Greek Week champions in 1991. Thirteen Years Ago: Kappa Psi Nu and Zeta Tau Alpha were Greek Week champions in 1979. Fifteen Years Ago: Tau Kappa Epsilon and Sigma Sigma Sigma were Greek Week champions in 1977. Seventeen Years Ago: Tau Kappa Epsilon and Phi Mu were Greek Week champions in 1975. Serving the Elon College Community / $3 Investing in Excellence Elon Ck)llege faculty and staff announced at college coffee April 16 that they have raised a total of $334,501 for the "Investing in Excellence' campaign. "Ek)n College is a college with a big heart and has given generously and done it with fun," Lela Penny Stevenson/The Pendulum Faye Rich said. Director of Public Information Pat Kmney said the campaign has not officially started, but the faculty and staff wanted to make everyone aware of the amount of money that has been raised. Kinney said the official kick-off begins April 29. Thornburg speaks about education INSIDE ■ The golf team has had another successful season. Charity Apple I The Pendulum The future of independent colleges and universities' educational programs is an issue that former attomcy general and gubernatorial candidate, Lacy Thornburg wants to tackle. College Democrats of Elon College sponsored Thornburg’s appearance at collegc cofTec April 16. "I am in favor of the propo.sal to have the tuition grant increased from 31,150 to SI,500 and the North Carolina State Contractual Scholarship Fund increased from about S400 to S600," Thornburg said. He .said that he felt independent colleges and universities provide excellent educational services and he wishes to help improve those even more. However, educational aptitude See Thornburg, Page 4 Media leaders chosen Charity Apple The Pendulum Graduation is fast approaching and with it comcs the relinqui-shing of media offices to upcoming seniors. History was made this year when Kristen Meyer, a junior communications major, was selected as the first woman station manager of WSOE radio station. "I'm a little overwhelmed, but I'm excited. I think it will be a good year .... it's definitely something I've always wanted to do," .she said. Meyer said that she was a little surpri.sed when she was selected, but is confident that things will run smoothly. Along with Meyer, the new editors for publications are: Kim Beane lor Colonnades, a co- ediiorship of the Phi P.si Cli yearbook will be shared by Sara Joyner and Valerie Burrows and DecDec Carowan is the new editor of The Pendulum. Each one of the women seem to be excited about their new positions, but fear and expectation arc also apparent. Carowan, who has been a reporter at the paper since her freshman year and was Arts and Entertainment editor this year, .said that .she has mixed emotions about her new job. It's kind of ironic. I used to be in class with Mindy Schneeberger, a former editor, and I would always see how .she wa.s like a zombie from working so hard at the paper. She would say. 'You never know, DecDce. You could be the editor someday.' It kind of .scared me to be selected." Carowan said. However, she's excited about the po.ssibilities about what The Pendulum can be" and how it can improve.
