Candidate visits area Buchanan hits campaign trail in Alamance Charity Apple The Pendulum ALAMANCE — Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan spoke to a group of over 100 people on Saturday, May 2 at the Alamance Battleground. He said he chose this location to give his speech because it and his campaign represent the fight against tyranny and high taxes. "Middle America’s revolt began with King George III then and it was with King George (Bush) in 1988." Buchanan said. "King George thought he could build on low taxes, but now America has a tax deficit of S165 million." Buchanan compared the control of land and governments now to that during the revolutionary war. "Land has been set up by those that didn’t want control of government 3,000 miles away and this needs to be free and independent of foreign entanglements." Buchanan said. "We need to phase out foreign Buchanan addresses local crowd. aid and think about forgotten Americans here," Buchanan said. "We should think ’America First’." He said that he has seen how much pain and discontent exists in the factories and work areas of America. On a campaign trip in December, Buchanan visited a factory near New Hampshire to deliver Christmas turkeys to workers. As he walked through the plant, he said people looked at him as if he was more fortunate than them. When he stopped to talk to the workers, one man came up and begged him, ’save our jobs’. Buchanan said that Americans seem to have forgotten their own countrymen. He added that the United States seem to concentrate on foreign countries and their affairs more than taking care of business at home. During the revolutionary period and before it, Buchanan said that politicians who built the Republican party, would get a hotel, make decisions and go back home to their farms. He said that the government should be restored to those workers, and the change should begin in the White House and Congress. "We need to change the White House and Congress by changing the amount of time people can serve in Congress," Buchanan said. He said some officials have served too long in office. Buchanan said he is not looking for the 1996 vote, but still believes he might have a chance to win in ’92. "Wc will still give King George a run for his money." Buchanan said. "We might have lost 23 straight, but at least we’re consistent." When asked about the situation in Los Angeles, Buchanan said that the arson, looting and violence is inexcusable, but the government was 24 hours late with troops. When asked if he would do anything differently, Buchanan commented that more help needs Elon contracts book store Allison R. Cooke The Pendulum Summer session students will be the first to experience it. Starting June 1, Barnes and Noble, a national book merchandiser, will be the new managers for the Campus Shop and Book Gallery. They manage approximately 200 other campus bookstores, and also own the B. Dalton bookstore chain. The change is not expected to be drastic. Barnes and Noble will be leasing the Campus Shop and Book Gallery from the college. They will be giving a "face lift" to both operations, bringing in their own shelving and presenting the merchandise in a different way. The Campus Shop will still carry trade books, clothing, and supplies, but students may see a difference in the clothing style, and price of other merchandise. Each spring a committee consisting of faculty, staff, and students will choose a book for the Elon community to read. The ultimate goal is to get students and faculty more involved in reading and being part of an academic community. By having the whole campus read a common book, they hope to see how people respond differently to the same material. "I think it's going to work well because it won’t be the same See Reading, Page 6
