Brown High School in Kannapolis, NC, he was the 1990 conference player of the year and selected to play in both the Shrine Bowl and the East vs. West All-Star Game. Today, he is #10, Maurice Blakeney, the quarterback behind the strong offense of the Fightin’ Christians football team. Red-shirted last year as a freshman, Blakeney was given the opportunity to concentrate on his academics and learn more about the Fightin’ Christians offensive line. Presently, he is the starting quarterback for Elon. Blakeney has already seen the major differences between high school and college football. “Everyone here is just so much better, bigger, and knows more about the game,” Blakeney explained. “It is a big difference from high school.” Blakeney feels that his greatest strength is his running ability, while he feels that his only small weakness is his Photo courtesy of Sports Information Office. Fightin’ Christians shut out Presbyterian College Matt Bali The Pendulum The Elon College Fightin’ Christians football team overpowered the Presbyterian College Blue Hose 21-0 before a crowd of about 3,100 Saturday at Burlington Memorial Stadium. Coming off road victories over Lenoir-Rhyne, 10-7, and Mars Hill, 23-3, Elon (5-1, 3-1 South Atlantic Conference) stymied a balanced Presbyterian offensive attack with a blitzing defense that has allowed 10 points over the last three games. “Our defensive coaches came up with a great game plan and the players executed it very well,” said Coach Leon Hart Elon’s special teams opened the scoring with sophomore Rod Clark taking the opening kickoff 91 yards for an early 7-0 lead. Neil Mays plowed 11 yards into the endzone in the second quarter to give Elon a 14-0 lead. Ray McCleod ended the scoring with a one-yard burst in the fourth quarter to give Elon a 21-0 advantage and a conference win. Defensively, standouts for Elon included Lamar Adams and Mark Foley who spearheaded the 10 sack assualts on the Blue Hose quarterbacks. “We just wanted to put pressure on their quarterback early,” said senior defensive lineman Adams. “Everyone felt good (for Elon) and we seem to be getting better with every game.” Elon lost the services of running backs Elliot Armstrong and Bobby Johnson in the third quarter. Both were running to try to get Elon positive yardage. Armstrong will be out of action for an unspecified amount of time with a dislocated shoulder.
