As an artist, I fee! the limitations put on this year’s theme offensive. Offensive? Yes, offensive. I will not participate in events that will require the destruclion of my creations. Why should I bother to waste my fraternity’s money, my tinie and my talent making a float or banner that will have to be destroyed after the competition is finished? It seems so senseless. We can’t even use Disney characters on our homecoming T- shirts, so 1 guess we’ll have to take lots of pictures to remember this year’s homccoming (or will we not be able to take pictures also?) Disney’s demand to proicct their copyrighted characters. It is their legal right to control the use of their characters and images. Disney is being very courteous in letting us use their copyrighted characters. What 1 don’t understand is why the school would pick a homecoming theme that would have so many restrictions and guidelines for the organizations to follow. Yeah, I’m pretty sure that there are going to be banners, floats, skits and other activities that will be absolutely incrediblc, and that they will probably be so great because of the Disney theme. 1 just don't understand the reasoning behind picking a theme in which all of your time, money and hard work will end up in the garbage can. Steven Kahle Merbster Sense of community lost at rally ^ musii 912-A S. MAIN ST. BURLINGTON, NC 27215 music. service (919) 222-8282 To the Kditor: How many limes have we Elon students heard ihe term "the community" of Elon College, not only in reference lo the town but also in reference lo the college itself? In my three years here, 1 have heard it countless limes, and I must admit that I have also used it. However," after Monday's embarrassing display of disrespect towards both Governor and Mrs. Clinton and Senator and Mrs. Gore by some members of our student body, 1 will think twice before calling Elon a community again. I have always ihought of a community as a group of people living together and working towards a common goal. Within this group are people with To The Editor. differing opinions, interests and values. However, members of such a community are respectful of the beliefs of others wilhin the group and also have the responsibility of upholding the ideals of the community to those outside of it. Unfortunately, on Monday, several members of our "community" chose to scream malicious obscenities not only at the political candidates, but also at Mrs. Clinton and Mrs. Gore, and furthermore made me ashamed of being associated with such a group. I, for one. am supporting the Clinton/Gore campaign, but even if President Bush had been the candidate on that stage, I would never have shouted such disrespectful and offensive greetings (and believe me, it is not because I have nothing to say). Everyone is guaranteed the freedom of speech by our constitution, but I also believe that everyone deserves a certain amount of respect - even those whom you are not supporting. On Monday, we had the responsibility of representing our school on a national level, and unfortunately, some people failed to meet that challenge. I can only commend those who worked so hard to make it happen, those who turned out in support, and those who came out to listen or peacefully protest.
