Twelve Years Ago:
The construction of Jordan
Center was approved.
Seventeen Years Ago:
The Elon College campus
escaped disaster from three
overturned locomotives. Box
tars and tankers were burning
and exploding on the railroad
tracks just outside Hook,
Brannock and Barney.

Trustees dig in at Campus Center groundbreaking.
Ceremony marks
official start of
construction

Maroon and gold balloons
flapped in the wind as the first
shovel of dirt was cast.
Students, faculty, trustees
and members of the community
gathered in a comer of Alumni
Gym parking lot to witness what
President Fred Young called “one
of the most significant events in
the history of Elon College.”
The groundbreaking
ceremony for the new campus
center took place on Tuesday
afternoon at 4 p.m.
“Construction of this
building is a historic step forward
for Elon College. This is a
tremendous day for Elon,” said
Board of Trustees member
Wallace Chandler.
“I think this is wonderful. I
don’t think that anyone out here
knows what the impact of this
center will be on the campus,”

The groundbreaking
ceremony began with a contest to
see what individual or group
could design a shovel that would
best fit a theme for the new
campus center.
The Office of Student
Activities won the first place
prize of $150 in the most creative
shovel contest.

Macy death
inspires
Safe Rides

A year after the death of a
Ireshman to drinking and driving,
the campus finally has a safer ride
home. Volunteers provided 143
students with rides home this
weekend.
Safe Rides is a new program
offered through the office of Elon
Volunteers! Thursday evening
marked the beginning of the
program. Program organizers
Patrick O’Malley and Eddie Stuart
are overwhelmed with the response
received.
“There were no problems and
the response was better than we
had ever imagined it would be for
the first weekend,” O’Malley said.
The idea lor the program
began about two years ago with
students and administrators. The
death of Chad Macy last February
served as a catalyst to begin Safe
Rides.

overrun during
flu outbreak

A large portion of the
college population has been
affected by the latest flu
epidemic.
"There's no way we can
count how many people have
been affected." Nurse Mary Jane
Salter said.
"It started in February and
we're still seeing people coming
down with it," Salter said.
This years flu hit all at once.
This episode of the flu began in
December and has not slowed its
course.
