Center ■ From Page 1 Barb Hanke, coordinator of student activities, represented the group. “I am really excited because we are going to use the money that we won for our spring break trip to Jamaica.” Hanke said. After months of only seeing blueprints and plans of the campus center, students and faculty seemed excited that the center was finally becoming a reality. “1 was Dean of Students for years and I appreciate the work that goes into making this type of thing happen,” said Jennings Berry. “I can remember when the ground was broken for the previous student center and I can really appreciate us moving to a new campus center,” said Berry. “I am excited about the fact that groundbreaking is t(xlay and that we arc really starting on the campus center. The planning process has been about three and a half years from beginning to the end. This is the culmination of this planning. It is very ^ringr shld 'Rbn- Rlepcyk,*’*"' Dean of Student Affairs. After an address by President Young, SGA President Mike Mooney, and Board of Trustees member Wallace Chandler, members of the crowd got a chance to do a little “groundbreaking” of their own. The crowd was supplied with shovels and construction hats and had the opportunity to have their picture made on the site of the new center. “We have already had our chance to break the ground,” General Contractor Glenn Sutherly said. “This is a very festive occasion. I am very surprised. I have been to groundbreaking ceremonies before and this is overwhelming. I am excited to be a part of it,” Sutherly said. “It was good to be a part of Elon’s history. I will be excited to come back here and see the center as an alumni,” said senior Tim Stephenson. Construction on the student center is expected to be completed in 20 months.
