Lailas had strolled into the Winn Dixie Thursday afternoon much like she does every other day, keys in one hand, checkbook in the other. She headed for the freezer case for frozen yogurt “I’d only been in there five minutes, trying to make a decision between Pecan Praline and Cookies ‘n’ Cream when ‘boom,’” Lailas said. Like a scene from a TV movie, quiet suburban Burlington became a battlefield on Thursday when a Winn Dixie employee entered the crowded local grocery store and started shooting. Gymnast to address graduates DeeDee Carowan The Pendulum The man who captained the only gold medal-winning U.S. men’s gymnastics team in Olympic history will deliver the commencement address on Saturday, May 22. A gold medalist from the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Peter Vidmar has been selected to share his experiences and successes with the senior class. The selection process began with the senior class advisory committee, AIR (Alumni in Residence), which conducted a survey of seniors to see what criteria they were looking for in a commencement speaker. The three major requests by the senior class were for name recognition, a non-journalist, and for the speech content to be motivational. “This is one of the first years See Speaker, Page 4 Nationals yank Pi Kappa Phi from campus DeeDee Carowan The Pendulum Elon’s chapter of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity has lost not only their name, but the very shirts off their backs. The fraternity’s nationals cracked down on the chapter on Tuesday, March 30 for their lack of compliance to the rechartering standards and released the brothers from membership in the organization. “We’re still a brotherhood,” said Pi Kap’s InterFraternity Council representative Phil Bianco. “The only thing they took from us is our letters.” What this means for the Sec Fraternity, Page 10
