WWPir DeeDee Carowan/The Pendulum WGHP's Roy Ackland served as Master of Ceremonies for the town's Centennial on Wednesday, April 7. Elon College centennial Town of Elon celebrates 100th birthday The Town of Elon College pulled out all the stops last Wednesday for its 100th birthday bash. The Centennial was celebrated with media celebrities, politicians, long-time residents, local school bands and bailors. Roy Ackland, of WGHP-8’s "Roy's Folks" fame, was master of ceremonies for the day's events. Mayor Jerry Tolley offered a brief history of the town, once known as Mill's Point. DeeDee Carowan/The Pendulum Onlookers enjoy the Centennial "The origin of the town is virtually inseparable from twd things; the railroad and Elon College," Tolley said. U.S. Congressman Howard Coble was also on hand to give birthday wishes to the town of 4,600 residents. Long-time residents of the town shared their stories from lifetimes spent within its tree- lined neighborhoods. Elementary school students raised their voices in song dedicated to the futures they may spend within those same neighborhoods. The town's commemorative centennial flag was raised amid cheers and hundreds of maroon and gold balloons were released in honor of Elon's special day in history. May Elon see hundreds more to come. 4.0 hour classes approved Jon Kimball The Pendulum Beginning in Fall 1994, incoming Elon students will be required to take only four classes a semester in order to graduate. The catch is every class will meet four hours a week, instead of the previous three. On Friday, the Elon faculty voted 58 percent to 42 percent in favor of adopting a four-credit hour policy. Dr. Gerry Francis, Dean of Academic Affairs, believes the new system will strengthen Elon's academic reputation. "The true measure of any institution is the quality of its graduates. This move will enhance the students' education," Francis said. Those in favor of the new system argue that students and professors will benefit from the change because more emphasis will be placed on fewer classes. "Students will be more active in education by allowing more depth into their individual studies," Francis said. See Courses, Page 12 New media leaders chosen for '93-94 Courtenay Houston The Pendulum For only the second time in Elon’s history, an all female panel of media editors and managers were chosen Tuesday afternoon. The Media Board, consisting of three faculty advisors, three student members and existing media leaders, reviewed credentials and conducted interviews with the applicants. See Media, Page 6
