April 15, 1993 Page 12 Courses ■ From Page 1 However, opponents of the four-credit plan believe the lengthening of class periods will hurt performance. Laura Lofton, vice-president of Student Union Board, said four-hour classes will be boring. "Upper level classes could benefit from such a change through field trips, but I think professors will use lower level classes to simply lecture." Senior Richard Bishop is confident the new format will help students concentrate on their . most important classes. "Less classes will help students be more focused. Obviously, some diversity is lost with less classes, but we are here to study specific courses." Administrators discussed the possible effects of a four-hour policy with other institutions which have adopted the plan, like Wake Forest and Furman. "We're not at the same level as a Wake Forest or a Furman,” said Francis, "but you don’t ever get there unless you have a plan, or a vision;" The plan won't take effect until Fall 1994, "The change will be gradual, so the majority of the students currently enrolled at Elon will be unaffected," Francis said. Cohn will present a lecture entitled, "The Legal Profession: Its Ethics in a Modern World," tonight at 8 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall. "He will talk about the nature of the legal profession, the tensions that exist there, and how we can raise the sense of vision in the law profession," said John Sullivan, head of the philosophy department. In his extensive law career, Cohn headed the litigation counsel for the Select Committee on Watergate in the Senate from 1973-74. Cohn and former Chief Justice Warren Burger were also major forces in the creation of the American Inns of Court, a system designed to raise the level of ethics in trial courts. Cohn has been a senior faculty member at Georgetown since 1959 and has presented oral arguments to the U.S. Supreme Court. Sullivan said that Cohn's discussion is timely due to the negative modern attitudes about the law profession. "People basically don't like lawyers," Sullivan said. "There's a real tension between a lawyer being an officer of the court and a lawyer being the cleverest person to make you win." 1066 S.
