April 15, 1993 ^ SGA Presidential candidates Shannon Moody plans to fight for women's issues The role of the Student Government Association President is to represent the students of Elon College to the best of her ability. The choice is simple. Who will represent you the best? I feel confident that I am that choice. I have served on the SGA for two years. I served as a Senator- at-Large and I currently hold the office of junior class Secretary/Treasurer. I understand how the Student Government Association operates and how it could operate more efficiendy. I am also a leader in several other campus organizations ranging from Intervarsity Christian Fellowship to a social sorority to the New Student Orientation Staff. Because of these experiences, I know that 1 am the best representative for YOU! 1 experienced one of the most powerful events of my college career at the "Take Back the Night" march. It was heart wanning to see students, faculty, and administrators unite under such a tremendous cause. Why do we not do this more often? We are a student body of great diversity and great competitive spirit. Let's work together to make a positive impact on our community. Imagine what would happen if all 88 Elon organizations banded together at least once per semester to work for the community TOGETHER! Another way for us to become united is to begin to recognize other's abilities and talents. Women on this campus are in the majority but we are still looked upon as the minority. Women are deans, associate deans, heads of departments, volunteers, presidents of organizations and yet we are not recognized. I would like for the SGA to work with the One-In-Three program and the Women's Studies Department to promote women’s issues on our campus. I would also like for SGA to ^ Let's work together to make a positive impact on our commu nity. 99 Shannon Moody Candidate \ sponsor a Woman of the Year award for an outstanding student or staff member. The first step to making these things happen is to elect a female president for only the SIXTH TIME IN ELON'S HISTORY! Other goals for the upcoming year include: . -Better communication between students and SGA; , -Newsletters informing students of SGA activities; -Monthly meetings with representatives of organizations to voice ideas and frustrations; -Better communication between administration and students; -Change open forum times to better fit into students' schedules; -Continued work on food ^rvif*Ac • -WORK FOR STUDENT NEEDS! Elon College, the choice is simple. I do not want this position for resume material or gratification. I want this position because I care about you and the future of our college. Vote for the candidate who will represent you well. VOTE FOR SHANNON MOODY! "The government is us; we are the government, YOU AND I." -Theodore Roosevelt Shannon Moody Charlie Smith wants more SGA representation Every year the students hear the same things from the candidates running for SGA offices. Issues such as better food in the dining halls, lower book prices, etc. I feel that they all have good intentions, but have fallen short because of not having a plan. It also seems that students take little part in SGA except for voting and that's not right. Students should be a part of every aspect of the SGA. The first thing that I will work on as President of Student Government is communication. I will appoint a Senator to every organization on campus including Greeks. These Senators will attend the meetings of these organizations and report to the members the happenings that appear in SGA. Also these Senators will serve to give students feedback on issues that they want to see addressed. For commuter students 1 will quickly address the issue of campus parking. I will hold a meeting with commutexs ?nd work out a plan so that commuters have better parking on campus. At the same time I will push for 24 hour visitation, library and computer hours during exams, so that students can study more freely, because often students try to cram everything in before visitation is over or the library closes and often overlook things in the rush. As President I will tap into other organizations for information to solve problems ^ Students should be a part of every aspect of the SGA. 99 Charlie Snnith Candidate with the SGA, because I cannot nor can anyone else do everything by themselves. I feel that I am not the best candidate but the only candidate for you in this election. I have been involved with the SGA and many other organizations on campus ranging from the Community Band to working in the LRC. I've seen the problems of students and I can relate to them. The first thing is to bring the campus together as a whole where the Greeks and the non- Greeks work as a whole, where the SGA helps and offers effective ideas as well as gaining them from organizations. I will end by saying, "The time has not come for change, but for action: because without action there is not change." Charlie W. Smith m A [iS D BROUGHTTO YOU BY TWO BEERS AND SOME COLD MEDICINE.
