Op-Ed September 16, 1993 President Young welcomes back all students Dear Elon Students: I would like to say welcome to the new students and welcome back to the upperclassmen. I hope that you are looking forward to the academic year as much as I am. Elon is institution a leading As an Elon student, you have a lot to be proud of. Elon is one of the top institutions in the region. Just consider a few examples: ■ Applications to Elon continue to increase, and competition is getting tougher. ■ The faculty at Elon is extremely well qualified. They have been educated at some of the finest institutions in the nation, and many have impressive experience in a variety of professions. ■ Furthermore, I know of no college that is moving ahead more aggressively than Elon. Exciting changes are happening Just walk around the campus and you can sec the visible changes. • The athletics ccnter is nearly complete. When this project is finished, we will have a totally renovated gymnasium for athletic and large college events, a new fitness centcr and new classrooms and laboratories. ■ Work is well under way on the new campus ccnter. This massive facility will serve as a focal point for campus activities, which arc an part of your education. Kour hour courses will allow greater depth of study Less visible, but more significant, are changes taking place in the curriculum. As many of you know, last year the faculty approved major revisions to the general studies program and adopted a proposal to move from a three-semester-hours system to-a four-hour system. The impact of these changes on your education will be dramatic. Peginning next fall, you will taker fewer courses each semester and will spend more time in the courses that you do take. That will enhance the quality of your interaction with professors and allow you to study your subject matter in much greater depth. These changes will not formally lake effect until next fall, but I suspect that you will notice changes in your academic life even now. In fact, I hope that you have already expierienced the impact of what I am about to share with you. Expect requirements professors tougher from your WTTV KELLEY ^ 0 OHUUE RMS/ HO\N COULD THlHeS 6£T WORSE?... U/IW Wr W- // In my annual opening address to the faculty last month, I urged your professors to demand greater academic rigor in their courses. That means you’ll be asked to read, research, analyze and write more than ever. You’ll spend more lime in the lab, library, practice rooms and studios. This will demand more self- discipline and hard work than may have ever been required of you. I have issued the following challenge to faculty. New students heard this during their convocation a few weeks ago. And now, I am urging all students: Expect more. Do more. And in the end, you will be better educated. I look forward to meeting many of you this year and hearing what you have to say about your expieriences at Elon. Tougher academic standards may cause “discomfort” for some of you. But it is the only way for you and Elon College to grow. This is my 21st year as president of Elon College, and I am looking forward to this year as if it were my first. Elon is on the move and changing, and it’s exciting to be a of the progress. Most of all, it is exciting to get to know and be associated with such a fine group of young men and women. Have a great year! Fred Young President SGA President Moody addresses students Shannon Moody To the Editor: As you noticed when you arrived on campus, Elon is changing. This will prove to be a very exciting year in the history of our college. The athletic facility, the new campus center, a new grading system, the four-hour system, and a new General Studies curriculum are all apart of our changing campus. I hope that you are all as excited as I am about these progressions. Unfortunately, along with these progressions come a few growing pains. Please be patient with the construction and the parking situation. This may involve having to go out of your way at times or walking a bit further, but we all must endure these discomforts in order to progress. The results will be well worth the extra effort. The SGA has been working extremely hard over the summer and these first few weeks of school. We hope to serve you the best way that we can this year. We are making some changes with homecoming, beginning a few new programs and dealing with some major issues that effect you and our campus. Our goal is to better student life at Elon and we will do that with your help. In my opening convocation speech to the new students I challenged them to be honest and daring. I want to challenge the rest of the Elon College community to do the same. Take an active role on our campus and help make these changes. We need motivation-not apathy. Shannon L. Moody President Student Government Association Alumnus makes good To the Elditor; A couple weeks ago a recent alumnus made his first mark in the real world. I will not supply you with his full name because of his fear of commercial exploitation. Although, I will tell you that his initials are JKR. Before the earth shattering news, I would like to give you a little background information on this graduate. Throughout his undergraduate years, this perplexing individual has had an infatuation with food. For example, he has eaten such things as flies, month old tuna salad, and when under the influence he has consumed things that I’d rather not mention. Another interesting anecdote is the speed in which he engulfs his prey- (i.e. a Domino’s pizza in two minutes). To the point- upon entering the Longbranch Steak House in Burlington, his eyes were blurred by some writing behind the bar. After the realization that the hot chicken wing record for the restaurant was only 56, his mind and stomach were set for stardom. I was not there to witness this display of greatness but his coach Mike Melamed was by his side the entire time. Luckily, I was able to hear what Mike had to say of JKR. “Throughout the restaurant there were many doubts, but for me and all my past experiences watching this guy eat, I knew that this was a simple walk in the park. Not once did his pace falter, nor did he ever complain of being full. In fact, he wanted to eat more but the restaurant ran out of wings.” I know what you are all probably saying- if I graduate with a psychology degree also, could I obtain such riches in my latter life? Probably not, says JKR. Although JKR does believe that if you start early in worshipping the cobra god and living through the words of Mike D, MCA, and Adrock you may be surprised with what you can actually accomplish in life.
