SGA holds elections with referendum
Tonya R. Taylor
Editor
The Student Government
Association will hold elections
today to vote on student
representatives and a referendum
on a student fee increase of $20
per semester.
The current student SGA fee
is $45 per semester, which is $90
peT academic year. The proposed
increase would hike student fees
up to $65 per semester, which
would total $130 per academic
year.
The present execuuve officers
and SGA adviser Rex Waters
decided at a September 20 meeting
to hold the student vote today.
SGA president. Shannon
Moody said that the decision to
hold the vote on the referendum
was made quickly because the
Board of Trustees meeting is on
Oct. 11-12.
"We need to make a decision
so that I can take that decision to
the meeting," said Moody.
If the student body votes in
favor of the increase the board will
have to incorporate this increase in
funds into the 1994-95 budget.
"The student body needs this
(fee increase) because SGA cannot
give as much money as they
(student organizations) need,"
Moody said.
Moody said the Student
Union Board is an example pf a
campus organization that does not
have the funds to subsidize their
programming ideas.
SGA Treasurer, Meghan
Maxfield saids that this idea
originated with last year's
treasurer, Dan Bowers.
"I'm working with a budget
committee I'm developing through
SGA. We're waiting for the
freshman to come in," said
Maxfield.
"We're trying to gel more
organizations recognized
financially on campus.
The offices to be filled are
senior class president, junior class
senator, freshman class president,
freshman class vice-president,
freshman class secretaryAreasurer
and eight freshman class senators.
Cable Act
may Impose
price hike
Sheila Kendall
Asst. Managing Editor
Elon College’s cable service
prices may jump to $40 a month
for full service cable as a result of
restrictwns imposed by the 1992
Cable Act.
Elon owns its own cable
system and through this
ownership pays for the rights to
programs that are broadcast via
satellite. Eton’s cable service then
resells this service to students.
According to Chris
Fulkerson, director of learning
resources, the 1992 Cable Act has
put “restrictions on us that are
expensive and could cause some
problems.”
To alleviate these problems,
Elon is negotiatiating with
Cablevision. In this situation,
Elon would still own the cable but
Cablevision would provide the
service.
If this transition occurs, a
significant price increase could
take effect. Students would have
the option to receive 41 channels
which would include HBO,
Showtime and MTV for around
$40 a month. The regular cable
hookup of channels 2 through 13
would be included in the student’s
room cost.
Fulkerson expects these
changes to be in place by the next
academic year. “We’re only trying
to do what’s best for the students,”
he said.
