October 7,1993 Editorials Viewpoint Residence hall reaps racism They call it the projects. They call it the ghetto. They said it was temporary. It’s Jordan Center, and yes, many African-American students live there. Who assigned these stereotypical, negative terms to this college residence hall? Those who chose those terms did so because a significant amount of African-American students live there and because it is the least maintained and inadequately constructed residence hall on this campus. Jordan Center isn’t even a part of the Elon College admissions deparunent tour. I would venture to say that white majority of this campus has no idea what the idea of a housing project or a ghetto represents to the average African-American. These terms are a disturbing symbol of what seems to be a never-ending oppression and racism that controls our society. The modern day ghetto and projects that exist today are communities for the most economically disadvantaged group in this country, African- Americans. The only difference is that this “project” was bought and paid for by Elon College. -Tonya Taylor Editor The Pendulum Serving the Elon College community Reporters Heather Anderson Matt Ball Tandie Ebrahimi Tara Ann Graytock Rick Grimes Ashley Stone Advertising Sarah Mitchell Graphics Editor Rob Mancuso Editor Tonya Taylor Managing Editor Erick Gill Asst. SAUSAGE MY FIRST, AND LAST, “TOP 10” Liberalism is a idea that is based on several shaky notions. I am going to give all of you folks a top 10 list of what makes me throw up my hands in disgust and say, “Egads, give me a break.” I wish I could give you Thurmond. 10. Womyn- Not women themselves, not the ERA, but this silly spelling of the word. No woman has ever been raped, sexually harassed, paid less than a male for a equal job or has suffered in any way because males have spelled woman W.O. M.A.N. Let’s truly solve the problem, not put a Band-Aid on it. 9. Gross Generalization- You do not agree with me- you think that America is in moral decay. You want more cops on the street; therefore, you are a Nazi. 8. Rank Hypocrisy- When Sen. Specter questioned Anita Hill harshly last year during the hearings for Judge Thomas (as he should have, her story has several inconsistencies), it sparked the "year of the woman” and several were elected to the Senate. When William Kennedy Smith was on trial for rape in Florida the defense dragged the alleged victim’s sexual past out and ran it through the mud. Nary a word Scott Miller from the liberals. 7. Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder- Need 1 say more? If I might interject, although Carol Mosely-Braun and 1 disagree on most everything, her stand against the United Daughters of the Confederacy getting their patent for the flag renewed was the stuff legends arc made of. 6. Just not getting it- Everyone had a good chuckle when President Bush was buff ooned by a scanner at the Supermarket. One has to wonder how someone can be a fiscal liberal when one looks at the adminisU'ations of FDR, LBJ and Jimmy Carter. Each and every one of them gets a big fat D, if that, on results for domestic economic policy. 5. Marxist, Socialists, Communists or whatever other ists they are calling themselves- All of that leftist stuff essentially goes bxk to the writings of Karl Marx. People have come up with variations but it is basically Marx who is father of that movement. In The Communist Manifesto, he ad vocates the violent overthrow of the bourgeoise. Now, he says it nice enough, shazam! the proletariat is in power. No, let there be no mistake, he is advocating genocide against a certain class of people just because they have money. Genocide is wrong, whether it be Jews, Cambodians, Bosnians, Polish army officers or those people who committed the sin of having money. 4. Frau Achtenburg- This Clinton appointee used her position in San Francisco city government to carry out a vendetta against the Boy Scouts of America because it does not allow homosexual scoutmasters. This organization keeps kids off the streets and improves their life. Her fascism is deemed okay because she is attempting to correct a perceived wrong. 3. Ted Kennedy 2. U2- Great music guys! Your politics are lame. 1. Flag Desecration- I’ll back banning the Confederate flag if you will ban burning the flag of the United Slates of America. I think that’s a fair UTide.
