October 28,1993 J Cf Gay rights forum to be held Q Q Kim Flow Reporter A Pennsylvania college student ys that making people aware of '"losexuals on his campus was the harassment he suffered return. ^avid Romano, a senior at uhlcnberg College in llentown. Pa., last year revived a ®up to represent homosexual ®lents. School officials also last ™nier added a clause to the “dent and faculty handbooks ohibiting discrimination against •wosexuals. ^avid Nester, dean of Student fc at the private Luthem college, “d the reaction of students and was minimal. ‘I has not been a highly '^•■ged political issue on J^'Pus," Nester said in a rccent *®Phone interview. “This change through in a very quiet tturt.” Romano’s efforts at ***ilcnberg mirror an attempt to make the Elon College students and faculty aware of homosexuals on campus. Over the next two weeks, lectures and discussions on understanding gay and lesbian rights will be included in a college teach-in. Kathryn Larson, an economics professor, announced the teach-in at a faculty meeting Oct. 1. She also announced that she is a homosexual. Larson said she wanted the faculty to know that they have at least one gay co-worker. Larson emphasized that she is not attempting to organize a homosexual group on campus. “The more we’re able to talk about issues on campus the more willing students will be to come out,” Larson said. The Elon teach-in is intended to encourage homosexuals to voice their opinions and to educate those who are not familiar with the gay and lesbian community. Romano said awareness is important because of the prejudice on his campus. “Homosexuals should not be shunned, but (rather) accepted for who they are.” Romano said he has received harassing phone calls because of his efforts. Romano said he welcomed the anti-discrimination clause at Muhlenberg. “It’s more of a safety blanket It’s a spring board for fuuire developments,” he said. Larson has noted that Elon college does not have sexual orientation included in the anti- discrimination clause. “It would be a statement on the institution’s part not to be so intolerant,” she said. Warren Board, Elon College provost, said the anti- discrimination clause will be discussed with school administrators and other groups. A decision will be made this academic year, he said. “The Elon community expects us to be fair,” Board said. “We would not discriminate against anyone protected by the constitution.” SET THE RECORD XI IDN’T the CLA YOU WANTED.
