February 10,1994 8 'Around the World'in 31 days Elon students travel abroad during Winter Term Lori Haley & Amy Logerwell Pendulum Editors During January students attended class and received credit for work that wasn’t all done on Elon’s campus. Winter term is a good opportunity for people to take part in study abroad trips. One trip went to London to study various subjects such as English, fine arts, history and communications. Students arrived in London and toured there for two weeks before taking a four-day trip to Scotland. Students then returned to London or traveled on their own for a week before heading to Amcrsterilam for a few days. “I went to Paris during our week off and hurt my back. 1 ended up in the hospital, and it was very scary. The hardest thing was the language barrier," Dorie Koenig said. Vicki Lillie, a freshmen on the trip had a bad experience when her wallet got stolen the first week. “I still had a great trip and would definitely go back. I’m thinking about going again for a semester,” Little said. I ended up in the hospital and it was very scary." Europe also became a temporary home for a World War II class that focused studies in England, France and Germany. “We spent equal time in each country, but I really had to learn how to live out of my suitcase,” student Rachel Misbin said. “The most fun I had was when we were in a castle in the Alps in Germany and the whole group got into a snowball fight. Dr. Hall and Dr. Midgeile were calling us ‘Wild Indians’ because we were running away,” Misbin said. Biology professor Dr. Every Sunday, II:00am Whitley Auditorium Music, Drama, and the Word in a Contemporary Service Kingston took a class to Jamaica to study animals for 10 days. Students went snorkeling and collected sea animals which they took care of in a tank. “It was a really weird trip. We didn’t get to see a lot of Jamaica, but we did learn a lot about animals from the water,” student Cameo Shoemaker said. The visit included going to Dunn’s River Falls, which is a 60-foot fall, and venturing into the main town Ochos Rios in Jamaica. Another winter term U"ip went to New York to get a taste of the “Big Apple.” Communications professor Gary Swanson and fine arts professor Catherine McNeela look classes up to New York for a week. “It was great because we made the cold weather work to our advantage. We got into shows that had extra seats including David Letterman and Phil Donahue,” McNecla said. Jon Weaver, a junior in Swanson’s communications class enjoyed the wo"k in New York. “I thought going to see a taping of ‘NBC Nightly News’ was ihe best because we got to see things behind the scenes. We saw how everything comes together,” Weaver said. Students that stayed at Elon for winter term had time for extra sleep and party hours. Junior Mark Baker enjoyed staying here for winter term. “I took an astronomy class, which was good because I fulfilled all of my science requirements. I also visited The Lighthouse a lot,” he said.
