College buys Wilburn's Tire & Auto plans to replace building with grass Mary Kelli Bridges Staff Reporter Elon College has purchased Wilburn’s Tire and Auto Center at Haggard and Williamson avenues to make way for a green space. The college will take posses sion of the garage on May 1. Aaron Wilburn, son of the owner, said the school paid just under $500,000 for the business, less than half the asking price. But, Wilburn said, there were other in centives Elon College has hired Wilburn as a mechanic. President Fred Young said the position had been open for some time. Another benefit, Wilburn said, is that his three children and his brother’s five children can attend the college for free. - Wilburn said he also will be able to take classes at no cost. WUbum said be was satisfied with Eton’s offer. “It was a very attractive deal. “You can’t put a price on edu cation,” he said. According to the faculty hand book, the college’s policy is to reimburse spouse and dependent tuition costs “to all permanent Elon College employees who normally teach at least 21 semester hours per academic year.” Young called Wilburn’s Tire and Auto Center an Elon College “community center and tradition.” WUbum said he was told that Elon College plans to raze the building and replace it with agrassy area. Myers said Tuesday the ad- I ministration forced her to resign after nine years so it can hire two people for less money. Coach Jackie Myers “My biggest frustration is the fact that I am an alumnus with an unblemished record. “I felt they could have done more to work something out for me,” said Myers, a two-time South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year. Athletic Director Alan White refused to respond Tuesday to Myers’ conmients. “All of us are proud for Jackie in her accomplishments at Elon and wish her well in her new pursuits,” White said in a jwess release last See Myers, page 4.
