March 17,1994 4 □ Myers From Page 1 Thursday. White said new basketball and tennis coaches have not been chosen. Senior center Rhonda Warren said basketball players don’t want Myers to leave. Players tried to convince White to keep Myers during a meeting Thursday, Warren said. Myers said that last spring she was told by White she was only guaranteed a position for one more year. White told the basketball team that Myers’ decision to resign was a mutual decision reached between her and the administration. White told the team that Myers’ win-loss record had not been improving. The fact that she had not won a championship also contributed to her departure. Myers compiled a record of 98-131 in basketball. In tennis, her teams Hnished in the top five of the conference the past two years. She also coached four All- Americans^ □ Wilburn From Page 1 of the conference the past two years. She also coached four All- Americans. Myers said she was told she could apply for other positions as they b^ame available, but she has not been told of any jobs. She said she does not want to leave Elon but is being given no other choice. Myers believes her ouster was “an economical decision” by the administration. Wilburn said his family’s business has been on the comer since 1953. At that time, Wilburn said, the college president owned the property and leased it to S.O. Service Station. S.O. leased the property to the Wilburns. In the early 1970’s, the Wilburns bought the building from S.O,, which had since become Exxon. In the college president’s will, he gave the Wilburns the first opportunity to buy the property. Wilburn said his family’s relations with Elon College have been good. He said he has provided services for the president, faculty, staff and students of Elon for many years. “I worked here with my father full time 22 years." Wilburn said. Young said the Wilburns have been good neighbors and their services will be missed. Myers said she was told she could apply for other positions as they became available, but she has not been told of any jobs. She said she does not want to leave Elon but is being given no other choice. Myers believes her ouster was “an economical decision” by the administration. According to Myers, the school plans on hiring someone to coach basketball only. Then it will hire another person for less money in an entry-level position to coach tennis and do something else. “The administration gave me little or no support at all to apply for other positions. They onfy focused on the financial aspect,” Myers said. The 1992-93 basketball season was supposed to be Myers’ last season coaching basketball. She was supposed to finish her career at Elon coaching tennis this spring. However, Myers argued that she had recruited seven basketball players and wanted to coach them this season. She put off telling her team about her resignation in hopes of getting another position at Elon. “I told White (that) if I only had one more year left. I’d like to coach in the new facility with the players I recruited. I still had hopes he’d change his mind,” Myers said. The basketball team was • upset with White’s news. They argued that he had not taken into full consideration all of the team’s past problems. B E 1066 S. Church Street Burlington, NC 27215 (910) 229-4247 Hours: Mon. & Fri. 9am til 6 pm Tucs.. There was a lot of moving back and forth and it was hard. Warren said team members felt it was their fault for playing poorly.
