Sports April 28,1994 8 Tennis wins fifth straight SAC title Bob Grimmie Reporter Elon captured the Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference men’s tennis championship last weekend. The championship tournament, which was held at Carson-Newman College, began Friday afternoon, and was completed on Saturday. On Friday evening, during the Food Lion/SAC banquet, Peter Lindstrom was presented with the SAC First Union Scholar Athlete Award for men’s tennis. Friday afternoon the Fightin’ Christians performed almost (lawlessly as they won all but one of their matches in straight sets. ~ Peter Lindstrom, Danny Colangelo, Andy Faehlmann, Thomas Hansson, Robert Eskilsson and Ashley Shaw advanced in the singles flights. The doubles teams who advanced were Lindstrom and Colangelo, Eskilsson and Faehlmann and Hansson and Shaw. On day two of the tournament, Elon received singles victories from Faehlmann, Hansson, Eskilsson and Shaw, as well as a clean sweep in the doubles division. These victories gave the Fightin’ Christians 111 overall points, and their fifth straight SAC men’s tennis crown. For his efforts in this tournament and contributions throughout the year, Thomas Hansson was named SAC Freshman of the Year. Bulldogs bury Elon for SAC crown Jeff Dunlop Reporter The Elon baseball team finished second in the Food Lion/SAC Baseball Tournament this past weekend, losing to top- seeded Wingate in the championship game. In the first round of the tournament against Presbyterian, Elon put up four runs early and then posted six more runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach, en route to a 10-3 home victory. Leading the way for the Fightin’ Christians was Travis Smith, who went 4 for 5 with a run batted in. The winning pitcher was Rod Gorham, who gave up only two runs out of three hits in six innings of pitching, dismissing Presbyterian from the tournament. The victory against Presbyterian earned the Fightin’ Christians a trip to Salisbury, N.C., for the rest of the tournament. Elon’s next opponent was Gardner-Webb, who it split with in the regular season. On this day, Elon was in a groove tagging Gardner-Webb pitching for 10 runs out of 14 hits in a 10-3 victory. Included in this barrage, was an eight run seventh inning that saw Chris York hit a grand slam and Maurice Blakeney hit a two- run homer. Brian Hendrickson picked up the win for Elon. The Fightin’ Christians’ momentum carried ovex into the next round against Wingate. However, the two teams battled to an 8-8 lie after nine innings, before Wingate scored two runs in the eleventh inning to pull out the victory and send Elon into the losers’ bracket. Designated hitter Kevin Green provided much of the offense for Elon, going 4 for S from the plate, including a double and a homer, and driving in three runs. Brian Cobbler was credited with the loss, giving up the two extra inning runs in relief. Now placed in a must-win situation for the remainder of the tournament, the Fightin* Christians found themselves playing the Catawba Indians, the fourth-seeded team. The game was, once again, a close one for Elon. Elon was now up against Wingate again, and was in the situation of having to win two in a row against it, in order to knock the Bulldogs off and win the title. Elon countered with a run in the third, but was unable to overcome the deficit Wingate went on to top Elon by the score of 6-3, thus clinching the SAC championship. Elon’s season is not over, however. The Fightin’ Christians finish its 1994 season with games on the road this week against Long wood College utd USC-Aiken. Softball comes up short Jeff Dunlop Reporter The Elon College softball team ended its 1994 campaign by being ousted in the Food Lion/SAC Softball Tournament held this past weekend in Mars Hill, N.C. The Fightin’ Christians, who entered the double elimination bracket of the tournament by doing away with Gardner-Webb by the score of 6-1 in the first round, were forced to play t(^-seeded Wingate in the second round. Wingate wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. That would prove to be all that Wingate would need, as a liite game rally by Elon fell short and Wingate won by the score of 4-3. The Fightin’ Christians scattered out five hits, but were unable to overcome the four-run deficit Susan French took the loss for Elon, giving up four runs off of six hits in six innings of pitching. The loss put Elon into a losers’ bracket contest with Carson-Newman, who earlier lost to Catawba 2-0. Led by the scorching hitting performance of C-N’s first baseman Kristi Cameron, who went 3 for 3 with a double, a homer, and two runs batted in, the Lady Eagles pounced all over the Fightin’ Christians. Carson-Newman tagged French for 14 hits and eight runs, as they ended Ekxi’s season with an 8-0 shutout. French was. again, the k>sing pitcher. It was her twelfth loss of the season. Carson-Newman went on in the tournament and eventually defeated Wingate in consecutive games to capture the 1994 South Atlantic Conference title. This title was its third in the last four years. As for Elon, it finished tte season with a 30-1'^ record overall, and a conference record of 6-9.
