An Elon College alumnus and
his wife made a $1 million gift
toward the college’s Investing In
Excellence fundraisingcampaign,
Elon College President Fred
Young announced Tuesday.
Furman C. Moseley, a 1956
graduate of the college, and his
wife Susan made the gift and the
new campus center has been
named The Moseley Center in their
honor.
With the Moseley’s contribu
tion, the three-year old campaign
has now raised more than $19.6
million.
“It is a delight and an honor to
receive this generous gift from
Furman and Susan. His leadership
as a student, a businessman and an
alumnus are truly exemplary, and
Susan is recognized for her civic
leadership throughout the state of
Washington,” Young said in a press
release.

This summer, Elon College
surpassed the $18 million goal of
its Investing In Excellence
fundraising campaign following a
$1 million gift from an alumnus
and member of the Elon College
Board of Trustees, according to
college officials.
In recognition of Robert Model
donation, the Board of Trustees has
named the fine arts building The
Faith Rockefeller Model Center for
the Arts in honor of Model’s
mother. Faith Rockefeller Model,
according to a press release.
“We ’re grateful to Bob Model
for this outstanding display of gen
erosity and leadership,” Presi
dent Fred Young said in a press
release. “This gift is indicative of
his vision for the future of Elon
College. We are truly fortunate to
have Mr. Model as a loyal alum
nus and dedicated member of the
board of trustees.”

Sexual assault charges dropped

First-degree rape charges
against an Elon College student
were dropped this summer seven
months after charges were filed.
The first-degree rape charges,
filed in November 1993, against
William T. Mills of Northfield
Apartments in Gibsonville, were
dismissed on June 6, according to
Alamance County Superior Court
documents.
ThechargesagainstMills were
dropped because District Attorney
Steve Balog chose not to prosecute.
Mill’s attorney Clay Hemric said.
Balog said the case was
handled by his assistant Bob Mar
tin. Martin said the case was
dropped due to lack of evidence.
Martin said it was “a complex
area,” because the case was strictly
a “one on one” situation.
Martin said that he received a
phone call from the alleged victim’s
boyfriend on the night the alleged
rape occurred. Martin said the vic
tim didn’t want to go to the hospital
for a medical examination, which

Three seniors, two juniors and
one sophomore were appointed to
class offices last Thursday by SGA,
Student Government Associa
tion President Larry Williams ap
pointed for the senior class, Khalil
Ekulona as president, Megan Jones
as vice president and Kristen Wither
as secretary/treasurer. For the jun
ior class, Racheal Dugger was ap
pointed vice president and Robin
Moats was appointed secretary/
treasurer. Kelly Parker was ap
pointed secretary/treasurer for the
sophomore class.
During the last SGA elections,
no one ran for any senior or junior
offices. According to the current
constitution, the president may ap
point people, who served at least
one year in the senate, to vacant
offices with the approval of the
senate.
Elections for freshmen class
president, vice president, secretary/
treasurer and eight senators will be
held Sept. 26. Five empty positions
for junior and senior senators will
be elected as well.
Williams said that about 25
freshmen have picked up petitions
for the upcoming elections. The
petitions are due Wednesday.
The rules for this year’s elec
tion have changed from last year.
According to the new rules, stu
dents are allowed to campaign in
residence halls until 10 p.m. Also,
the winner of this year’s election
will be determined by popular vote:
the candidate who receives the most
votes.
Williams said a personal goal
for next year is to have every class
filled by election and at least five
people run for president. Three
people ran for president in the last
election.
Also this summer, Williams
hired as a SGA secretary, sopho
more Michael Rodgers, who is ex
pected to be paid on an hourly ba
sis.
Last spring, the SGA Senate
began revising its existing consti
tution. Williams said the constitu
tion needs more revisions and he
has asked political science profes
sors and administrators to read the
revisions.
The new constitution, if ap
proved by two-thirds of the Senate
and a majority of the student body,
would create the executive office
of secretary. Williams said he would
appoint Rodgers to fill that posi
tion.
Unlike the other executive po
sitions, the secretary would not have
to be a rising junior or senior.
If the revised constitution is
passed and Rodgers is approved by
the senate, he will become a paid
executive member of the SGA,
Williams said. Williams, SGA Vice
President Cathy Sparks and SGA
Treasurer Zuni Johnson earn $200
a month, Williams said.
Though Rodgers is not yet an
executive officer, Williams said
Rodgers was hired by the SGA as a
secretary and will be paid on an
hourly basis. Rodgers said his wage
