News September 22,1994 11 Freshmen SGA candidates explain their goals, intent Bryan Bowen Andrea Schmidt Staff Reporter Rackground; Bryan Bowen is from Columbus, Ohio and will be majoring in International Management. Bowen is 18. Expericnre: Bowen was superintendent of Youth in Government at his high school, which was involved in workmg with the city of Upper Arlington. As a part of the Senior Committee at his high school, Bowen said he helped change the school's class scheduling to more of a university style. Goals; Bowen said he likes learning from experience. If electcd he would like to send a committee to other campuses to critique their dining services and to get ideas on how to make Elon’s better. "I enjoy getting involved with people and making a change when I can," Bowen said. Background: Jason Dennis is from Hendersonville. I N.C. and willj be majoring inf communica-L tions with em- '^^son Dennis phasis in broadcast. Dennis is 18. Experience: Dennis held offices in six clubs at his high school. Some of them include president of Key Club, Drama Club and his church youth group. Goals: Dennis said he wants to make a difference on Elon’s campus and would like to hear any suggestions from the Freshman class. "Whatever the students want. I’ll try to get done." Dennis said. Background: T r i c i a DiMariaisfrom Saddle Brook, N.J. and will be majoring in sec ondary educa tion. DiMaria Tncia DiMaria is 18. Experience: DiMaria was president of her high school’s Interact Club which helped to raise $2,500 in seven months to bring a child to the United States from Poland who needed heart surgery. She also served on student council for four years. (loals: If elected DiMaria wants to work toward changing visitation hours for the campus dorms. She says the off^ce of the president needs an energetic person an3 that she is just the person for the job. “1 think I'm more open-minded and with my background I could do a good job," she said. Background: Karen Kennerly is from Alex andria, Va. and will be majoring in English. Kennerly is 18. Experience: Karen Kennerly None. Goals: If elected. Kennerly would like to work with the Dining Com mittee and help make some changes in the food service. She would also like to set up a forum once a week for the freshmen class so they could speak with the class officers, voice their opinions and give them sugges tions. “It's important that the fresh men get a voice and are heard on campus," she said. \ Background: Jason Nollen is from Springfield, Va. and will be majoring in sports medi cine. Nollen is 22. Experience: None. Goals: “I know what it takes to be a leader," Nollen said. Nollen worked for four years after graduating from high school to save money for his college edu cation and believes that his matu rity and experience in life will ben efit the freshmen class. If elected Nollen wants fresh men students to feel comfortable with coming to him with problems or concerns. “I want to hear their ideas, be cause it's their class.” he said. Jason Nollen Background: Jason Peel is from Eliza beth City, N.C. and will be ma joring in Span ish and sec- ondary educa- Jason Peel tion. Peel is 18. Experience: Peel was student body presi dent of his high school and was responsible for organizing a half day forum for each grade level of the school. These forums helped the student government hear what changes the student body wanted to see in their school. Peel said. Goals: Peel would like to see the grad ing scale changed and wants to work to get 24 hour visitation for campus dorms. “I think I am a hard worker and that I could represent the students well," he said. Background: Michae Stamps is from Blairs, Va. and will be major ing in commu nications with an emphasis in broadcast. Stamps is 18. Experience: Stamps was vice president of his senior class and helped plan his senior prom and senior class trip. Stamps also helped bring in a speaker for his high school bacca laureate. Goals: Michael Stamps Stamps would like to take on a leadership role within the fresh men class and says that he has a lot to offer. Stamps said he believes freshmen aren ’t taken seriously and he wants to change that. “I want something fresh for the class of ‘98," Stamps said. Background: Cory Yeager is from Lexington Park, Md. and will be major ing in political science. Yeager is 18 Experience: Yeager served with the model general as sembly at his high school and worked as committee chairman in areas such as human resources and crime. Goals: Yeager thinks that too many politicians let their power go to their heads and don’t truly repre sent the people. “I want to represent people rather than make their decisions for them," Yeager said. Yeager is currently working on aspects of student housing and says he said he will continue to do so if elected.
