■ Narvaez From Page 1. to return to the Elon College campus and not to have contact with the victims or their parents. “I don’t think it justly pun ishes him,” Champion said of the plea agreement. “We were prepared to go to trial,” Champion said. “We have to play the hand that’s dealt us.” Champion said the charges were reduced because one of the three women decided against pur suing the charges. According to court reports, police. Champion and Narvaez, this is what happened: On April 25, two women stu dents told police they had been sexually assaulted on campus by the same man, Narvaez. One of the women, a 20-year- old, told police she was raped at about 3 a.m. on Feb. 19, 1993, in Moffit Dorm. The woman was at a party when Narvaez invited her back to his dorm. Champion said. Narvaez told the woman she could sleep on the couch, but then he climbed on top of her and raped her. Champion said. Narvaez said he invited her to his room, where his roommate was sleeping. He said that after he got ready for bed, he left the room. Narvaez said he didn’t return to the room until the woman left. She did not report the incident to police until April 1994. The second woman told police that a friend attempted to rape her at about 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 25 in Maynard dorm. Narvaez and the woman are life-long friends. Both were from New York and lived only a few houses away from each other. Cham pion said. “They were like brother and sister,” Champion said. The woman had gone to bed 1066 5. September 22, 1994 when Narvaez knocked on her door late at night. He told her that he had been kicked out of a fraternity house and needed a place to stay. Cham pion said. Champion did not say which fraternity house Narvaez was asked to leave. Narvaez wouldn’t say which fraternity house he was liv ing in, but he did say that campus security asked him to leave. While in her room, he began “messing with her.” He fondled her and tried to pull her pants down. Champion said. Unable to remove her pants, Narvaez penetrated the woman with his finger. Champion said. Narvaez said that he and the woman were in the same bed, but that nothing happened. He said he didn’t know why the woman accused him of raf>e. “I asked myself that question a hundred times,” Narvaez said. She did not report the incident to police until April. Another student accused Narvaez of raping her off-campus in February. At the time, an Elon College police official said District Attorney Steve Balog did not have enough information to prosecute. On Feb. 26, the 19-year-old woman said she had been raped at the New Sheridan Apartments on East Haggard Avenue. According to hospital reports. the woman went into a bathroom with Narvaez. He turned off the lights and they began "fooling around.” He forced her into oral sex and vaginal sex on the floor of the bath room, according to the court re ports. He then told her not to turn the light on and “wait here a few min utes before coming out of the bath room,” according to court docu ments. Narvaez said they were in the bathroom together because she fol lowed him into the room. Though he said they kissed, he said he did not have sex with her. The woman went to the hospi tal and immediately reported the incident to police. On May 5, Narvaez was in dicted on five counts of sexual as sault. The next day he was arrested in his home in New York. Narvaez said he spent 10 days in a Suffolk County jail before Elon College police drove him back to Elon College. He spent four days in a jail in Alamance County. “That was the worst experi ence of my life.” Narvaez said. Narvaez’s mother, Josephine, 'said Tuesday that the family de cided not to chance a trial because her son could have spent more time in jail. If he had it all to over again, “I would have went to trial," Nm] said.
