Letters Letters To The Editor Students say to ARA: Feel OTir jjuiti October 6,1994 To the Editor: I read in last weeks paper that you feel that the student body was “too la/y to wnte.” Well, here is a letter voicing my opinion on the food in the McEwen dining hall. When 1 leave after every break fast, lunch , and dinner I am re pulsed! For example, I noticed one day for lunch we had rice and chicken “Chinese” and for dinner they mixed it all together and added cheese and called it a casserole! Another day we had bacon and eggs for breakfast and for lunch we had cheese and bacon pizza! If 1 eat another salad, which isn’t even that great, 1 believe I’ll go hame with ears and a tail. You haven’t even heard the best yet, one day last week my friend found ants in her bread! As if the leftover food was not bad enough, they decided to add ants to the meal plan! If Ilive to see my sophomore year, I hope the food will improve! Janell Schumacher To the Editor: As a junior^ I have noticed that every year the food served in the dmmg halls ha* gotten progres sively worse. I am consistently di.sappointed and/or disgusted, to say the least, wvcry unic I eat on campus. When my parents pay well over $2,000 each semester for a meal plan, 1 expect quality services, and so far I have yet to receive it. Some examples of my eating experiences with ARA, and those of some reliable friends, include the following: Ants on the hamburger buns during the new student orienta tion period Hamburgers and spaghetti at least three times during the first week of school Steak from Philly cheese steaks reincarnated three days later into what was called B-B-Q pork * Beef and peppers over rice with random chunks of left-over Rosemary pork from the week before Orange, grease-saturated hashbrowns (I always thought that potatoes were white.) GREEN roast beef on my French dip sandwich Mislabeled ladles in the salad dressings (Those are not really fat-free dressmgs for those of you watchmg your fat-mtake!) • '-V'.-V'.-- . .. .TjhaKI 11 * Stale deserts, fuzz in the pud ding almost every day, and a fly gelled in my Jell-O * Something found in the veggie pizza that resembled a pubic hair * Bugs in the bacon bits * Incredibly small proportions * Poor quality of food in gen eral—over-cooked, under-cooked soggy, hard, stale, wrong tempera ture, or a combination of the above Several complaints have been made to the manager of Mcewen by my friends and me, and a lame excuse has always been given. I find myself eating out all the time just to survive. I cannot afford to do this, and I should not have to afford to do this with a $2,000 meal plan. Something needs to be done. Eating is not An option for me or for anyone else. Our health suffers without a balanced, nutritious, ed ible meal three times a day. I am not getting this at Campus Dinmg Services. I hear people complaining about the food everyday. More residents need to voice their opinions about this problem if we want something to be done. This is our home for fouryears. We deserve better value than what we are being served by ARA. Amy Slider 'To the Editor: I have a question for the caf eteria workers and managers at McEwen and Harden dining halls. Why do you insist on being so rude and hard to get along with? We (Elon Students) stand in line for nours just to hear, “you can only have one meat!” Our parents and some times the students have [>aid thou sands of dollars for this very lim ited amount of food. And the food itself is nothing to brag about. I have heard horror sto ries about metal found in the vegetables and have seen for my self hundreds of tiny ants crawl ing through a sub roll. This be havior and quality of food must improve. Elon students are not getting what they pay the big bucks for. Justin Roller To the Editor: Although it is obviously diffi cult to run a cafeteria that must feed hundreds of students I think that the way our cafeteria is run and the type of food that is served is anything but acceptable. One of the first problems is size of the cafeteria. Harden is absolutely ridiculous but even Mcewen be comes mobbed. One way to cur tail the problem of size would be to extend the hours of meals. There are plenty of times when I can’t make it to breakfast or I have a class during lunch and I can’t eat until dinner. I know that there are many people who agree with me. Longer hours are necessary! As for the quality of food. A person can only eat so much cereal and ice cream, realize that the food is not al ways that bad but room for im provement is an understatement! We pay to much for our meal plan to eat the kind of food we are given. The cafeteria over all needs to get there act together and do some improving. Jessica Taccone The Myth I AcSPEW£N ^R^ALITY r SGA candidates speak their mind To the Editor; I wish to express my disa|>point- ment with the Pendulum. In the September 29, 1994 issue, the pa per apologizes for the bad picture takinc of mvscif in the Seotember 22 issue, but in the apology you put in a but. That but makes it sound like you arc blaming me for the pictures being messed up. I believe that your the ones taking the pic tures. I feel that the last part of the apology could have been left out. I have taken pictures for newspapers before with a hat on and they have come out fine. I am also upset that you spelled my name wrong in the apology. Michael Stamps To the Editor: With politics, I guess I’ll have to take the good with the bad. I’m speaking of the new elections oc curring today for the positions of freshman class president and vice president. One day, I was told that I “won,” and the next, I was penal ized for something that was not my fault. I appreciate the article printed on your front page last Thursday (and the picture). 1 know that it was an honest mistake on the pan of S.G. A. and others, and there’s nothing any one can do about it now. I’ve learned that it’s much better not to dwell on the past. Anyway, I’ve had fun so far. My goal is to win Again, this time with a majority, over 50 per cent of the votes cast, instead of simply the most votes. We need a good turnout, so plea.se Vote! I wish all of the candidates running good luck in this race and future ones. I would also like to thank them and the others for giving me great competition, making me cam paign even harder. People congratulating me were caught off-guard when I told them about the re-elections. When I found out about it, officially at Wednesday night’s S.G.A. meet ing, I shook my head in disbelief. A few people in attendance voiced their opinions about looking at what’s best for the freshman class - starting to progress with a new president or making people vote again, causing possible confusion and impatience. I don't want to seem egotistical, but I feel that I won fair and square, according to the rules all the candi dates were given from the start. Even though I don’t particularly like the situation, it has to be done, so “let it be,” as the Beatles would say. Now I know why nice people have trouble in politics. Jason A.
