Student body experiences slight decrease in minorities Mary Kelli Bridges Senior Reporter A student said she was raped Friday evening on Elon College's campus by a stranger with a knife, Elon College Police Chief Dan Ingle said Tuesday. The assault was at least the third assault by an unknown per son on campus this semester and at least the 10th sexual assault to have occurred on campus since 1990. It was the first stranger rape in years, Ingle said. The woman reported the at tack Tuesday evening to police. Ingle wouldn't give a description of the woman or explain why she waited to report the incident. The woman said she was at tacked near The Faith Rockefeller Model Center between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., Ingle said. The suspect, a 5-foot male, was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, "rough pants,” possibly jeans, and had curly hair, Ingle said. The Mary Kelli Bridges Senior Reporter The editor of Phi Psi Cli re signed Oct. 26 because of prob lems maintaining a yearbook staff, she said. The yearbook's adviser told a Pendulum reporter Tuesday that he plans to resign as yearbook ad viser next week because he can not do “a salvage operation on the ■’ yearbook.” The fate of this year’s year book is up in the air, but a 1994-95 Phi Psi Cli edition is still possible, the chairman of the Media Board said. Dean of Students Smith Jack son and Associate Dean of Stu dents Jana Lynn Patterson con firmed that the college is investi gating an incident. Neither would say if that inci dent was a sexual assault. Ingle said Jackson had spoken to him about the incident before the woman reported it. However, Ingle said, "we have to have a person who is willing to come forward, sit down and file a complaint," before uled to meet until Nov. 18. The^fi ve voting members of the board had not heard of Phi Psi Cli Editor Tricia Ziegler's resignation Tues day night. Student Brian Weckerly said Tuesday that he resigned last week from the Media Board because he could not make the meetings. Weckerly was one of three students on the board who was selected by the Student Government Associa tion president. Ziegler said she told Media Board Chairman Rex Waters that she resigned Oct. 26. Sixdays later, none of the Media Board members who could be reached for comment had officially heard from Waters of her resignation. an investigation can begin. The attack was the third as sault on a student by an unknown person reported to either police or the college this semester. ■ On Sept. 10,studentMichael J. Seek, 20, was assault in a wooded area near the college, according to an Elon College police report. Seek said he was walking in the woods between Sheridan Place Apartments and the greek houses at about 3:30 a.m. Seek said he kicked his assail ant and ran, after the man tackled him from behind. Seek could not give police a description of his attacker. ■ On Sept. 23, a student said she was knocked down and kicked in the leg between midnight and I a.m. while she was walking alone on the sidewalk near Carlton build ing, according to a memo addre? ,sed to students, faculty and staff from Jackson. The woman said she didn't See Rape, page 4. Waters said Tuesday that Ziegler’s and Weckerly’s resig nations would not be official until he had their resignations in writ ing. Waters said he hoped the Media Board could meet before Nov. 18. Media Board member George Padgett, chairman of the journal ism/communications department, said it was not appropriate that the Media Board had not been offi cially informed of Ziegler's res ignation. Ziegler said that she was step ping down as editor of the year book because of problems with getting enough people to work on See Yearbook, page 4. Erick Gill Editor-In-Chief Elon College saw a slight de crease in the percentage of Afri can-American students who were enrolled to the college this fall, according theOffice of Admissions. While the number of African - American students only dropped by two, the percentage fell from 5.6 percent in 1993 to 4.9 percent in 1994. The fwrceni dropped because the enrollment increased by 75 stu dents, said Nan Perkins, dean of Admissions and Financial Plan ning. ■‘We're focusing on attracting more minorities," Perkins said. "It’s disappointing when it falls, but il should be belter this coming year" The number of incoming His panic students remained the same at three. The number of Native Americans increased from zero to three. There was a decrease in the number of Asian students from six in 1993 to two in 1994. Also, there were 11 other minorities in 1994 and 14 in 1993, according to the Office of Admissions. Perkins said that she hop>es to keep next year's freshman enroll ment to about 850 students. There are 933 freshman enrolled this se mester. She also said the college has been trying to target more minori ties over the past few years. "We've been focusing on that for several years,” Perkins said.
