Elon College has been I making national headlines in both pnnt and television news. CBS’s “48 Hours" is scheduled to air a show on airline safety to night, said Pal Kinney, director of Public Information and Publica tions. The program includes a seg ment on Elon’s involvement with the Amencan Eagle commuter plane that crashed outside of Ra leigh in December. Kinney said the focus of the segment would be on freshman Lauren Anderson, who survived the crash, junior Douglas Suckow, who died in the crash, and fresh man Misty O'Day, who was sched uled to be on the plane, but changed her plans CBS contacted the college af ter the crash, Kinney said She said the school was “wary" ibuut let ting the show shoot footage at Elon. "We didn’t want to exploit the tragedy," Kinney said However, Kinney said the pro ducers and crew members were Conte JVleet the tzlon College BOARD OF TRUSTEES "very respectful" CBS crew members taped the "Gathering of Fnends" in January and Suckow’s memonal service in Februar>. Also Sunday night NBC Nightly News aired a piece on Janie Brown’s Business of NASCAR course. Brown, the chair of HPEL. teaches the 25-seat class during winter term The NBC story fcKused on the class and how NASCAR has be come big business. The piece fea tured footage of students on and off campus.^. The NBC story was shown on the West Coast and most of the East, hut not in the Elon College area Last May Benny Parsons and an ESPN camera crew re-created Brown's class to shoot footage. However, the story hasn't been aired yet. Print media have also picked upon the NASCAR story. The Wall Street Journal, Southeast Journal, ihe Burlington Times-News and Raleigh's A/fwi have all run articles about Brown'sclass. ■ In other television news, Joey Senal’s winier-tenrt class sal through an episode of "Geraldo." which aired last week.
