Sports March 16,1995 9 Women grab wins from St. Andrews College and Shaw University Fightin' Christian softball team improves its record Bob Grimmie Staff Reporter i The Elon College softball team improved its record to 7-9 with a sweep of St. Andrews Col lege on March 11 and by splming itwo-game series with Shaw Uni versity on March 13. Against St. Andrews, Elon pitcher Teresa Schi fano struck out 11 batters to help lead the Fightin’ Christians to a 6-2 win. Game two went much the same way as the first game. St Andrews played tough defensively but was unable to match the pitch ing and hitting of Elon. The Fightin’ Christians won with a score of 5-1. Hope Rehman provided the , offense with a spark all day. In two ' games she went 7 for R at the plate and scored three runs, with one RBI Shaw walked away with the 3-1 win in the first game of the series between Elon and Shaw. Elon rebounded well in the second game. Led by the strong pitching of Schifano and a solid defensive effort behind her. the Christians defeated Shaw 12-0. Head coach Sue Leonard is ^ We keep im proving every single time we play." Sue Leonard encouraged by the level of play as she prepares her team for its first regular season conference match up against Gardner Webb. "We keep improving every single time we play," said Leonard "We’ve got a lot of talent, it’s just a matter of how fast we progress." The Fightin’ Christians play their next game today against Uni versity ofMass.-Lowell at2:30p.m They play this weekend against Gardner-Webb at I p.m.on Satur day and again on Monday against University of Maryland- Baltimore at 2:30 p.m. All three are home games.
