§ports I; t ^ r V % 1* * r October 5,1995 11 TO THE TOP WA BULLET Dave McKay Basketball season is just ound the corner, and there lave been some very interest- ;ing changes around the NBA. {The high level of uncertainty in ^he off-season has made for lomething of a changing of the ;u^d in the league. In the most major of guard hanges, the Washington Bui- ilets acquired perennial alKstar fMarkPtice last week. The sec- bnd-best true point guard in the [NBA (next to John Stockton, of ourse), Price will be the final •iece to the Bullets’ playoff hunt. [ Nov. 17, 1994 was sup- iposed to be the Bullets’ fran chise turning point. On that day, Washington signed rookie forward/center Juwan Howard and dealt for *93s top overall pick Chris Webber. Washington general man- [ager John Nash and tiie long- suffering roundball fans of D.C. declared a day of celebration, t There was a problem, though. Who could get the ball to these big men? Scott Skiles and Doug ' Overton did what they could, butthis team needed a top-flight point man. They went to the draft lottery forthe sixth straight year. Ta-da! ‘‘Mr. Price I’d like you to meet Chris, Juwan* and Calbert ... Rasheed? Yeah, he’s on his way.” The main reason why Nov. 17 is NOT the day that Will go downin Bullets’ history is Sept. 27, 1995. That’s the date the Bullets swapped their ’96 first rounder for Price and signed rookie Rasheed Wallace. Not a bad day’s work. In fact, the moves prompted Nash to declare, “I think we have a legitimate shot. This a major day in the Bullets’ history.’’ I think I may have heard that one before. This time ho w- ever, I have to agree. If Jim Lynam is able to coach at all, and he may not be able, this team could showcase itself in the NBA Finals^ “...and this showcase can be yours, if the Price is right ” Volleyball digging for success Colleen Herndon Staff Reporter The women’s volleyball team split four games at the Elon College Invitational Challenge last week end and lost to Presbyterian Mon day making its overall record 21-6. A total of eight teams partici pated in the weekend tournament which was held at Alumni Gymna sium. The Lady Christians won their 20th match of the season defeating Eckerd (5-6) in a grueling five game marathon, 15-5, 13-15, 15-12, 13- 15, 15-13. “We played extremely well in the first game, but really struggled as a team with our blocking,” head coach Sue Leonard said. “In games two and four our blocking broke down and it almost cost us the match.” However, in the second game Andrew Brickey/The Pendulum Elon volleyball team giving its best effort against Fairmont State. against Rollins College (11-4), Elon could not defend against the Tars’ serving power. Rollins swept Elon in three games, 15-12, 15-12, 15- 13. “We played with a lot more intensity in the second game, but Rollins was serving extremely well,” Leonard said. The Fightin’ Christians also split day two of the tournament as they defeated St. Leo and lost to Fairmont State. Elon won a hard fought game in the first match-up against St. Leo, (7-8), 5-15, 15-10, 9-15, 15- 13, 15-13. However, in the second game, Elon fell short to Fairmont State (16-7) in another five game mara thon, 15-3,6-15,15-7,0-15,15-13. Freshman Lisa Bumgarner had 13 kills and 10 digs in the losing ef fort. “Blocking and receiving are important aspects of the game, and we did neither all weekend,” Leonard said. “We played flat all weekend.” The highlight of the tourna ment was the nomination of senior Debbie Hall to the All-Tournament team as voted on by the participat ing coaches. Hall had 43 kills, 62 digs and three service aces during tournament play. The next matchup for Elon (21 - 6) will be on Oct. 5 against High Point University beginning at 7 p.m. Women stay focused in nine-game winning streak April Perkins Sports Editor The Elon College women’s soc cer team has completed more than half of the ‘95 season with a new coach, one loss and a nine-game winning streak. “(The winning streak) is a prod uct of many things in which the players are doing,” head coach Paul Webster said. “They’re taking care of themselves off the field, they’re staying healthy and when they’re coming to train they’re doing a real good job of staying focused.” Elon successfully earned their ninth win of the year against Mars Hill College, 3-0. This was the eighth out of ten games in which Elon has held its opponents score less. Elon’s only loss came in the season opener against Liberty Col lege. The score was 0-2. “They have prepared them selves really well for every match that we’ve played since that first one,” Webster said. Elon’s overall record stands at 9-1 while its South Atlantic Con ference record remains undefeated at 3-0. Elon has already walked on Wingate College (5-1), Presbyte rian College (4-0) and this past weekend Mars Hill College. How ever, tough competition lies before Elon. On Oct. 7 the Christians will face Lenoir-Rhyne College fol lowed by Gardner-Webb, Catawba and Carson-Newman. Each game will be played at home. “They feel very good about what they’ve done so far. But they still have very realistic visions of what’s coming up,” Webster said. “They realize the games coming up are extremely important and they seem to be taking them very seri ously.” Elon’s Stephanie Sorrells is the team’s leading scorer with eight goals. She has also contributed 33 shots as well as three assists. In addition, Kam Radford and Molly Page have each scored seven goals towards Elon’s success. Elon has proven its strength on the field, however, Webster be lieves there is one weakness his team faces that may not be resolved. “We’re not the swiftest of feet. If we get in a game where the other team is technically as solid as we are and they’re a lot faster, that could be a problem. But there’snot a whole lot you can do about that.” Despite the lack in speed, Webster and the Lady Christians have proven their abilities as a team and will continue to do so as they face the last half of the season.
