After four straight weeks with
out a win, Head Coach Leon Hart
and the Fightin’ Christians finally
came away with a much needed
victory.
Elon notched its third win of
the season by coming from behind
to defeat Division I-AA opponent
Wofford College, 20-16.
On the opening kick-off run
ning back Robert Rogers fumbled
the ball and Wofford recovered on
the Elon 13. Two plays later the
Terriers ran the ball in to open the
scoring.
Elon would then turn the ball
over on its next two possessions.
Fortunately the Elon defense
stepped up like it has so many times
this season and prevented Wofford
from scoring off the turnovers.
“You have to give a tremen
dous amount of credit to our defen
sive players. We had run four of
fensive plays and turned the ball
over three times and only gave up
six points,” Hart said.
Down 9-0 early in the second,
Elon managed to get on the board
when kicker D.J. McGarrigan split
the uprights from 28 yards out.
Elon then capitalized on a
Wofford turnover by orchestrating
a nine-play, 49-yard drive. The
drive was caped off by running
back Ron Johnson’s one-yard
touchdown which gave Elon a 10-
9 lead.
After a fumble recovery by
defensive lineman Sam O’Shields,
McGarrigan kicked his second field
goal of the game, this time from 24
yards out, giving Elon a four point
lead with three minutes left in the
third.
Wofford quickly answered
back with a touchdown enabling
its team to regain the lead 16-13.
With 8:34 left in the game,
Elon put together one of the most
impressive drives of the season and
it couldn’t have come at a better
time according to Hart.
“Even from the sideline you
could sense the determination and
the intensity that was out there in

the huddle. I had several players
tell me that there was no question in
anyone’s mind out there, that we
were going to score, no matter what
it took.”
Running back Reggie Ignash
completed the 16-play, 68-yard
drive with a one-yard touchdown
run that gave the Fightin’ Chris
tians a four point lead with a minute
and a half left to play.
Wofford’s last attempt was
foiled when Elon safety Keith
Gaither intercepted a pass on first
down.
“As soon as I had it I just
wanted to hit the ground immedi
ately and let the clock run out,”
Gaither said.
Hart believes that his football
team has had much adversity that
has endured this season.
“The one thing that makes me
so proud of this football team is that
they have never given up. They
never considered quitting,” Hart
said.
“When we were down, there
was no bickering or complaining.
I’m proud of the way these guys

have hung together and pulled to
gether. They play so hard and they
deserve to win.”
Elon will wrap up the season
this Saturday when they take on
Wingate in the Homecoming/Hall
of Fame game. Kickoff is sched
uled for 2 p.m.

The University of South Caro
lina at Spartanburg was host to the
1995 Southeastern Regional Cross
Country meet in which the Elon
women and men placed fifth and
eighth respectively.
Leading the Fightin’ Chris
tians was freshman Meg Crawford
who finished 13th overall with a
time of 19:34.69. Her impressive
times all year earned Crawford the
selection of All-Regional. “Meg
did a great job,” Coach Bill
Morningstar said.
Following close behind were
teammates Julie Vance (29th) and
Suzanne Czarnetzky (30th)
Patricia Norris also ran well and
placed 33rd.
“The women ran an outstand
ing race,” Morningstar said, “They
ran the best they did all year.” The
,ady Christians concluded their
season with an overall record of
70-14.
Elon’s men’s team finished
eighth out of 18 teams with 247
points.. Morningstar said he was
pleased with the men’s perfor
mance,
Michael C/)dy led the men
with a time of35:31.49 and placed
32nd out of 130 runners. Josh
Cutter also finished within the top
50. The men completed their sea
son with a 67-27 record,
Morningstar hoped that both
teams would finish in the top five
or six. However, Elon competed
with powerhouses such as the Uni
versity of North Florida and
Kennesaw State,which both fin
ished in the top spot.
The cross country teams are
already optomistic for a promis
ing season next year.
“All of the players will be
returning next season,”
Morningstar said, “We expect to
be very good.”
