Letters November 9,1995 Hettersi To The Editor Racial understanding needed at Eion Dear Editor, Elon consists of a great diver sity of people and we have a lot to learn from each other. Every per son on this campus should try to learn about other racial and ethnic groups. Elon has many African- American studies classes and a re source room. We also have other classes that cover other races and cultures. There are many interna tional students here who can fill us in on how the rest of the world sees things. I think we need to use these opportunities much more. Every one should get to know people in all the groups. The more we under stand each other, the easier it will be for us to get along and succeed. We do not have to agree on every thing, but we must understand each other’s point of view. Sometimes it is easy to have our friends and not reach to others, but we must go beyond this. Each person, race, culture, and gender are better off when we learn to understand each other and value one another. No organization or group on this cam pus is racially exclusive so let’s use the freedoms we have to learn about each other. Lets take a cue from the Bible, “ Love your neighbor as your self’, Mark 12:31. Every one in this world are neighbors so let’s start acting that way. This letter is not a complaint or a condemnation. It is a call to unity. As Martin Luther King said, sit down to gether at the table of brotherhood.” The benefits are harmony, unity, justice, understanding, and peace. Who in this world would think we don’t need more of these things? Unity in Christ, Geoff Gentry Airport shuttle needed for Raleigh-Durham C>ear Editor, This letter is in regard to the airport shuttle system that is of fered to students over the holiday breaks. I feel there should be more than the offered shuttle to Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad, but also to the airport at Raleigh- C^urham, The idea of a shuttle is great. but I feel that those students flying out of Raleigh (and there are many) should be given an equal opportu nity to avoid high taxi and plane fares depending on their destina tions, We should also be guaran teed a safe ride to our destinations. This adds unwanted stress and con fusion in trying to find a ride to and from the airport making sure we are at the right place at the right time, I didn’ t arrange my travel plans around the shuttle system, but I don’t feel it’s too much to ask the college to provide a shuttle in both directions, I hope this is taken into consideration in the near future. Criticizing is easy when looking in from the outside Dear Editor, I don’t understand why people on this campus are so quick to criticize. It seems like they don’t care whose feelings they hurt in the process. So far this year, I’ve heard that the cafeteria has a ter rible selection and The Pendulum sports section sucks. ^ The only thing that I find horrible here is that no matter how much time or effort people put into organiza tions , they never get appreciation. If you were to visit UNC- Chapel Hill and grab a bite from their cafeteria, which is also run by ARA, you would be surprised. It is not all you can eat, and al though they have a nice selection, you are hungry two hours later. Our cafeteria has a budget and they do whatever they can, with what they have, to please us. It would be a miracle if someone could come up with a system that stays within the budget and pleases everyone. If you hate it thatmuch, you should try getting your money >ack and see if you can provide yourself with meals off campus. Save yourself a quarter to call lome for more money, because after a month you might be broke. As far as the sports section goes, I do not see a problem. I see an obvious effort by The Pendu lum to make sure that they have (Ufferent'teams or sports in the paper every week. If a team doesn’t have an aiticle, at least their results are shown in the box scores. TTiere is even a box that contains the upcoming sporting events, for those who attend. With only two pages to work with, I think the sports section does a nice job. There isn’t a lot of room and there are so many sports to cover. Also, Tve noticed that the same four reporters write all the stories. These reporters are vol unteers who go out of their way to write and I wouldn’t be surprised if their feelings have been hurt. My point is simple. It’s so easy to sit back and look at things from the outside in. Nobody ever has an understanding of how dif ficult something is unless they are actively involved. Why not make a conscious effort to try and de velop an understanding or ask questions to find out what really happens before we criticize? Maybe then, life at Elon won’t be so difficult.
